Welcome Howard, This help page gives the directions and philosophy for merging. It sounds complicated to begin with but is really quite easy. http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Help:Merging_pages To begin bring up one of the Richard Jackman's page. In the upper right corner there are a number of drop down menus, find "More" and select the "find duplicates option, find the correct name and number you are looking for and place a check mark in front of it and then click "compare." Then use the information on the Help page to continue through the process. drop down menu etc. [28 March 2009]

Hi, I'm also a fairly new user though I've read a lot and uploaded some small charts for the experience. I share your concerns about the drop down menus. Fixing that is probably on Dallan's list of things to-do but not the highest priority. There are still lots of small frustration points that will eventually get fixed but right now he's focusing on the biggies. I find it just easier to type the whole place in than to struggle with getting that drop down to say what I want. Just type it and go on.

I stopped watching this site for a while out of frustration, wanting it to work just like it should. BUT, I am still drawn back to it because of it's many potential features that I want and hope will be available as they continue to work on it. We have to realize this site is still in beta - meaning usable with frustration - but not got all the bugs worked out of it yet. And the site is not a commercial site and so doesn't have a dozen programmers hurrying to get it 'on the market'. It's a dot org site with one programmer, Dallan, and a LOT of very helpful volunteers. I really like that the folks here are so good to answer our questions if we get stumped. Since I'm new to wiki, I get stumped a lot; so it's good to have someone to help us along. Try that with rootsweb or ancestry.com!

I am gradually easing into this site because I have a great need for collaboration on various projects and this is the best collaboration site I've found. I would advise you keep a list of the areas that give you the most trouble, and send it to Dallan now and then, so he can know what still needs more work. Also since even the HELP pages are volunteer (that's us) written, when you can't find the help you need, let someone know so they can write the help pages more clearly. I think maybe we could set up a page or section just for newbie help! What do you think?

BTW, It would be helpful if you'd fill in just a bit on your profile page. I don't know if I'm writing to a complete newbie or an experienced genealogist who is new to wiki. And if you want to respond to this, you can do it here; I'll watch this page. --Janiejac 18:13, 27 March 2009 (EDT)

To janiejac. WeRelate is very easy and a pleasure compared to another wiki site I tried. WRT drop down, because the technique is so common I thought the software would be off-the-shelf by now but then I'm not a programmer. WRT to profile, I am still working on a draft. Hi, I moved your question to the main Watercooler. Sorry but this is a bug. I found it frustrating also in 2007, but guess I have just gotten used to it. Suggestions to help with this are to try and shorten the list by entering Fairfield, Conn instead of just Fairfield; use the scroll wheel on your mouse if you have one; or try the down-arrow or page down keys. Hi, you may have found a bug. Please report exactly what you did and what happened to Dallan. It's OK if it takes you a week or two to review your gedcom. We just like to keep tabs on new uploaders. Sometimes things are confusing. It's worth it, though. If you go through the process you can immediately find out if you have ancestors in common with other members of the WeRelate community. Another frustrating evening! Re Winthrop Jackman (2), how do I get a title under the image and how do I remove the note and note box on the image?? Also what is the best place to go for help for ANY problem?--HLJ411 20:12, 24 August 2009 (EDT)

Sorry you're having a hard time. I looked at your page and I think figured out what you need. To remove the note box: Clicking on the image will take you to the wiki page for the image. Edit this page, there is a Delete Note option next to the image. Then save the page. To get a caption: edit the Person page. Scroll down to the Image section below Sources. There is a box for the caption. Note also the primary box out front. This will force the image to the top of the page. You may not want this with the will, but people use it for photographs. Here is the help for Images. Note that the help link is near the bottom of the Person page when you are in edit mode. The Watercooler is available from the WeRelate menu on most pages. It is a good place to ask questions because it is watched by many people and you can usually get a quick answer. You can leave a message for me by clicking on my user name at the end of this message. GEDCOM review [12 May 2011]

Hi! I'm one of the volunteer administrators on WeRelate. I just reviewed your Powell Brownlee Dobbyn.ged file. There were two errors that should be fixed. (I suspect it's just a matter of a couple of typos, but it did affect the quality of the data.) The first is that William Robinson (father of John Henry Robinson) is listed as being born in 1868 and John Henry is listed as born in 1866. Obviously one of these dates is wrong. The second is the marriage of John McGillicuddy and Mary Cameron, listed as 1897; however, Mary is listed as having died in 1889. If you would correct those errors, it would be very appreciated. I already corrected them. Also did a re-review and no errors showed. I'll try again. I give up! Person page, Mary Cameron died 28 Feb 1899; Family page, Mary Cameron married 29 Dec 1897 however same family page shows her death as 28 Feb 1889!! How do I edit a person on a family page?

I see what you mean. That's odd that her death date on her Person page doesn't match what it says on the Family page. I'll kick it over to Dallan to see if he can correct it. -Amy (Ajcrow) 22:13, 12 May 2011 (EDT)

Looking for information on the ancestors of Thomas Skinner Jr and Juliet Rebecca Ring [3 August 2011]

Hello HLJ411,

I stumbled across your page on Thomas Skinner Jr and Juliet Rebecca Ring yesterday while restarting my search on my ancestors after about 10 years. Thomas Skinner Jr and Juliet Rebecca Ring are my great great grandparents and I'm amazed at the information you have on here. I've only peaked at it but I'll look through the Ring side and add them to my genealogy program.

My father was Richard Wayne Skinner, his father Frederick A'Delbert Skinner, his father Adelbert Skinner, his father Thomas Skinner Jr. Up until last night all I knew was as far as Adelbert and after seeing your record here and a visit to the National Archives here in Ottawa, I found Adelbert's birth & marriage certificate and low and behold Thomas Skinner Jr and Juliet Rebecca Ring are his parent listed in the document. I also found Thomas Jr & Juliet's marriage record. After a 10 yearbreak at this genealogy thing I can finally move above my great great grandfather, it's frustrating not getting far on your own namesake.

I was wondering if you might be able to help me expand from your entry. I have reason to believe I have found links to Thomas Sr but I have conflicting census documents. If I could get Thomas Sr.'s wife's name that's be a great start. Would you have any leads that might help me clarify my sources? Also, I'm wondering if Adelbert had any siblings... do you happen to know if this couple had children?

If you happen to have any information I'd really appreciate any help you can give me. It's been about 10 years since I was stonewalled finding additional Skinners and finding this information has really helped me get back into this, not mention the amazing surprise. Thank you so much for your time, effort & making this available.

No rush on a reply but anything you can do to assist me in my search would be great,

Harris Truax marriage [18 September 2013]

Rebecca Harris was my 3G Grandmother. I've done a lot of research on her. She was married at least 5 times, and her 3rd husband was Parker Truax. This marriage ended in divorce, but I know very little about it. She was quite a bit older than he, although her exact age is difficult to pin down. Her first marriage was 1838, so she was probably at least in her teens (No one signed for her as minor). She and Parker had no children, again probably an age factor.

Sources needed: Person:Perrin Fay (2)

Perrin was named executor of David Fay's will made at Madison County, New York State in 1826. The will also mention's Perrin's nine other siblings

I appreciate you taking the time to share this, but...

I'm guessing there's a source for this. Now a descendant of David Fay, or maybe somebody looking for a person named Fay that doesn't yet know they are a descendant of David Fay, would obviously like to know the "nine other siblings" and so might want to be able to look up the will for themselves, and so might like to know what that source is; and a descendant of Perrin Fay would ask, was his birth date mentioned in the will (one would suppose his death date wasn't)? But if not, how do you know it?

This being a collaborative site, the goal is to enable people to build on your work, not to require that they re-do it. Which is what is necessary when you don't cite any sources... --Jrich 03:32, 2 March 2016 (UTC)
