Next step: Review your GEDCOM [24 September 2010]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded govegus.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Gedcom [21 December 2010]

Hello Govegus, I see you have been working on fixing the warnings from your gedcom. There are a couple of other items that I see at first glance that will be easier to fix within your home software.

  1. Place names. Depending upon the software you use, you should be able to globally edit places. It would be most helpful to have the country and province included. That will help the place matching software correctly link your location to the WeRelate place page.
  2. Alternate names: It is preferable to have alternate names on separate lines, if your software allows. One example is Anna Maria (de) Jager(s). Choose one spelling version as primary, and place the others as alternate names.

Let me know if you have any questions. --Jennifer (JBS66) 10:59, 21 December 2010 (EST)

I'm not sure if you had a chance to see this message before you sent the file to Admin Review. Is it possible for you to edit your places globally in your home software? --Jennifer (JBS66) 12:03, 21 December 2010 (EST)

Dear Jennifer,

Unfortunately I cannot include alternative names in my software. I've taken most spelling variations to the comments area (to make it easier for other users to check the information against the source, all of them being online for my tree!), Anna Maria de Jager being an exception. I will review this.

On place names, these I can edit globally. However what is the policy with towns that were historically in another municipality (gemeente) or province than they are now? In fact the process is still going on (municipalities are being merged, at times into hitherto inexisting names). Sorry if I've missed this in the guidelines.--Govegus 13:54, 21 December 2010 (EST)

Regarding alternate names, I believe you are using Aldfaer, right? There is another user here who uses that software, and I'm almost positive he imports gedcoms with alt names, I could ask him for details if you'd like.

The policy on placenames, as I mentioned in my email, is that they are titled on WeRelate dorp, gemeente, provincie, Netherlands as they were around 1900. It was recently decided to add gemeente, so the renaming is a work-in-progress. Your gedcom can have the place as it was at the time of the event... as long as you have at least the country, this will help place matching immensely.

I've come across a few other items in your gedcom, I'll post a couple now, and the others later...

  1. It looks like you have a duplicate family in your gedcom: Luitje Borgman and Geertje Fielstra.
  2. Pieter Pouw and Teuntje Ververs. If Teuntje was born in 1818, she would have been only 4 years old when she had her daughter Jacoba in 1822.

--Jennifer (JBS66) 14:16, 21 December 2010 (EST)

I figured out the Borgman thing, it was a problem in the software, only one person was listed but I managed to get rid of it by unlinking and relinking the children. Pieter Pouw too solved. As you can see I've started updating all placenames in order to get them right. I'm still a bit puzzled as to the places though, I found a comprehensive place name list here http://www.werelate.org/placelist/Netherlands.html, can I use this? Or should I use 's-Gravenpolder, Borssele, Zeeland, Netherlands instead?--Govegus 16:48, 21 December 2010 (EST)

Now that you have uploaded govegus.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two weeks to give you time to review it.

Just wanted to let you know that Jennifer noticed that you had a number of people born before 1750 in your GEDCOM. We don't normally allow new users to upload people before 1750, but Jennifer has vouched for you, so we'll allow them (back to 1550). I'll re-process your gedcom tonight.--Dallan 11:56, 24 January 2011 (EST)

A few items [26 January 2011]

John, here are the items that I found when looking over your gedcom. I will work on Family:Johanna Wassenaar and Jacoba Domhoff (2) and post separately about that.

  • This family Family:Cornelis Schoenmaker and Immetje Boots (3) brought up quite a few "warnings" - but I believe the late christening dates were throwing it off. With Cornelis being christened so late, it looks as though he has his first child at 2! There are probably enough oddities in this family to warrant a second look though.

That is it for now!--Jennifer (JBS66) 12:35, 25 January 2011 (EST)

OK I've sorted out the situation with Cornelis Schoenmaker and Immetje Boots: all of their children except Cornelis (born 1813) belong to Cornelis' father Jacob x Catharina Breuer instead. However they're already present there (in fact I moved Aeltje to the right parents but she shows up double now) so the question is: how to remove these doubles from the database? John--Govegus 16:26, 26 January 2011 (EST)

Let me use Pieter Schoenmaker as an example. What you'll need to do is merge the duplicate Person:Pieter Schoenmaker (12) and Person:Pieter Schoenmaker (8). Go to Admin>Compare pages and put both of the page titles into the Compare People section (by page titles, I mean Person:Pieter Schoenmaker (12) and Person:Pieter Schoenmaker (8). You will then go a page that shows the two versions side-by-side. There will be two sets of parents listed, we'll deal with that next. For now, click in the checkbox next to Match - scroll to the bottom of the screen, and press Prepare to Merge. The items that have a check in the box will be brought over to the new page - the items without a check will not. You can select the data you want to have on the new page, and press Merge.
When the pages are merged, you can go in and edit the person to remove the incorrect set of parents that will be listed under "Parents and Siblings family group page". I'll keep an eye out if you have any problems. --Jennifer (JBS66) 16:37, 26 January 2011 (EST)

I think it worked... :)--Govegus 17:02, 26 January 2011 (EST)

Looks great! Nice job :-) --Jennifer (JBS66) 17:09, 26 January 2011 (EST)

Jennifer, another question if I may: how do I change a family title like Jan Goossen and Elisabeth Haak (3) into Jan Goossen and Elisabeth Haak? If I do a compare then (1) and (2) don't show up. I suppose it's to do with the ghost pages of the previous gedcom imports. And I'm afraid it's all over...--Govegus 17:17, 26 January 2011 (EST)

Yes, it does have to do with the ghost pages. Since your gedcom was partially uploaded and then deleted twice, some of your pages are now (3) (the (1) and (2) that were deleted do not get overwritten). Each page needs an index number - ie the (1) - to make it unique. While, conceivably, you could rename the pages to take the #1 spot - you don't really want to do that for hundreds of pages, do you? :-) --Jennifer (JBS66) 17:26, 26 January 2011 (EST)

Well I suppose I don't... but the family I mentioned really does deserve that place :-)--Govegus 17:29, 26 January 2011 (EST)

Oh, they most certainly do :-) and you beat me to it.... --Jennifer (JBS66) 17:32, 26 January 2011 (EST)

Johannes Sirach [25 January 2011]

These families should be all set now Family:Johannes Sirach and Jacoba Domhoff (3) and Family:Johannes Sirach and Johanna Wassenaar (1). I renamed and edited the Family that had Jacoba Domhoff married to Johanna Wassenaar. --Jennifer (JBS66) 13:23, 25 January 2011 (EST)

MySource titles [29 January 2011]

John, I noticed in a few of your edits that you've changed the title of a MySource that is on a page. For example, on Person:Willem Looff (10) you changed the Tresoar URL. The source that appears on a Person or Family page is just a link to another page - in this case it linked to MySource:Govegus/Overlijdensakte Leeuwarden 1876 aktenummer 337 www.tresoar.nl/polpel/as web.exe oleeuwn D 11970228. By changing the reference on the person page, the link turned red and became invalid.

I think the fact that your MySources look like URL's makes it a bit confusing... The gedcom software tries to manufacturer an intelligent MySource title based upon the information from your source. You have a few options, one would be to retitle the MySource, but I don't think this is optimal (especially since Dallan reprogrammed the system to remove the http:// from them). The better option, I think, is to change this MySource into a Source. You could perhaps source it to Source:Leeuwarden, Friesland, Netherlands. Burgerlijke Stand and include the link to Tresoar in the text box of the source on the person page. Then, if nothing is linking to the MySource any longer, you can delete it. To determine if any pages link to the MySource, click on 'What links here' from that page. Here is an example of a page where I've sourced it to the Leeuwarden Burgerlijke Stand: Person:Piebe Laverman (1). --Jennifer (JBS66) 11:26, 26 January 2011 (EST)

You mentioned this was a bit confusing... I think this is a case where the explanation is more complicated then the actual process! You can see on the Person:Willem Looff (10) that the 2nd source is "red-linked" which means that if you click on it - it doesn't go to a valid page. With this edit, you wanted to change the Tresoar URL. The problem is that what appears in the Citation Title box is the title of a page, in this case MySource:Govegus/Overlijdensakte Leeuwarden 1876 aktenummer 337 www.tresoar.nl/polpel/as web.exe oleeuwn D 11970228.

I edited Willem's page directly as an example. I sourced it back to the primary source, the Burgerlijke Stand, and added a link to the document at AlleFriezen along with your Tresoar link. --Jennifer (JBS66) 10:16, 29 January 2011 (EST)

That's clear. I'll do it only for sources that need editing though because though it looks better it's a bit too much work for the entire tree at this stage.

Something else, I've imported a Gijsman gedcom which reports the same error (which is actually isn't) twice, and which prevents me to import the gedcom. Could you have a look please?--Govegus 12:55, 29 January 2011 (EST)

I agree, it would be way too much work to do this for your whole tree!

Regarding your gedcom, I will finish matching and updating the 6 families and import the file for you. Allowing editing for small gedcoms with few errors is something that Dallan plans to fix this week. --Jennifer (JBS66) 15:10, 29 January 2011 (EST)

Hello John, your recent gedcom is only going to import one unconnected person (Geertruijd Eswilder), is this what you intended? --Jennifer (JBS66) 15:34, 30 January 2011 (EST)

I went ahead and uploaded the file. The only page that was added was: Person:Geertruijd Eswilder (2). She is considered an 'orphan page' because no other pages link to it (ie: no parents or spouse). She is likely a duplicate to Person:Geertruijd Eswilder (1). Your list of duplicates that is updated daily won't catch this, so if they are duplicates, you can merge them by:
  1. Click on Admin>Compare Pages
  2. Put both page titles into the Compare People section

‎michiel kuijs.ged [27 February 2011]

I took a look at your ‎michiel kuijs.ged. There is just one more step that you'll need to do before I can import it. On the Family Matches tab, you have Matched the families, but you will also want to Update them with your new information. When looking at the families side-by-side, look at the items with a check box next to them. If the box is not checked, the information will not be imported. This is okay for the sources that are duplicates - those don't need to be imported again. However, you have some new birth, death dates etc, that you will probably want to import (by clicking on the check box). Then you can scroll to the bottom of each screen and press the Update button.

I have returned your file to user review. When you are done updating your matches, just press Ready to import again. Thanks! --Jennifer (JBS66) 08:44, 21 February 2011 (EST)Jennifer

Adam Fransen Ververs.ged [28 February 2011]

Hi John, I imported your gedcom. There were a few items that I noticed that you may want to look at.

  1. Adam Ververs (b:1829)- birth date and registration date
  2. Izebrand Jan Tiedens - born in Finsterwolde (Groningen, not Friesland)
  3. I linked your following places to their WR pages. If you need to find your pages that link to these places, you can visit the place page and click "what links here".
    1. Leimuiden, Noord-Holland to Place:Leimuiden, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands
    2. Heukelum, Gelderland to Place:Heukelum, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands
    3. Hagestein, Utrecht to Place:Hagestein, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands
  4. You may want to search for "Buurmalsen, Buren, Gelderland, Nederland" (you'll need to wait a few hours though, until the search indexes your pages). I believe that Buurmalsen and Buren were two separate gemeenten.

If I made any errors linking those place pages, don't hesitate to let me know. --Jennifer (JBS66) 10:06, 28 February 2011 (EST)

Image licensing [8 June 2011]

Hi, I noticed that you uploaded a few photos that requested a review to determine licensing. Generally Solveig will put this template on a user's talk page when they request a review. There is also more info at Help:Image licensing. Most of these types of photos fall under "fair use" because they are a lower resolution copy. However, I noticed with a few of your photos they are quite large. Generally, we ask that users reduce their photos to under 150kb. There are instructions for doing this on Help:Images tutorial.

You can edit the licensing on your images by going to your image contributions and choosing a different license in the edit screen. Let me know if you have any questions, --Jennifer (JBS66) 07:47, 8 June 2011 (EDT)

Hi Jennifer, I've taken none of the original photos :) They come from different family archives. In most cases they are high resolution photos I've taken from framed photos, hence their size. I will try to reduce that.--Govegus 07:57, 8 June 2011 (EDT)

Splitting Gedcom [8 September 2011]

Yes, you are still on the trusted uploaders list. --Jennifer (JBS66) 05:42, 8 September 2011 (EDT)

Image Licensing [23 September 2011]

Hello, I am a volunteer admin and it's my job to help people learn the system. You asked for help licensing your images. I can't license your images but I can give your guidance. There are numerous licensing options, but most images fall into one of these categories:

  • Original published in US before 1923
  • Low resolution copy of an historical photograph. (When you reduce the image before upload, the resolution is reduced.)
  • Snippet of historical document
  • Work of US government--Public domain
  • If you took the picture, select the CC-BY-SA
  • If you know the photographer, get written permission.

Hope this helps. Please be aware that images left in the "Help needed" category for longer than two weeks will be deleted. If you have any more question please leave me a message. Please see your image Image:Anna Wassenberg 1.jpg, Image:Anna Wassenberg 1.jpg, Image:Arnolda Rosalina van Ophem.JPG, Image:Jan Egbert Goossen - Elisabeth Haak.JPG, Image:Johannes van Ophem 2.jpg  :)

go.ged [23 January 2012]

John, I took a look at your gedcom. There are some errors listed on the warnings tab. It would be preferable if these could be fixed on your home computer first and your gedcom reuploaded. I know that can sound like a pain in the neck considering the difficulty you've been having with your gedcoms! However, the data check that WR does when uploading a gedcom provides a nice opportunity to fine tune our data. Some are just tiny typos (like missing a digit in the year). There are a couple of families that warrant a closer look: Jozias Haak and Jacomina Dieleman (both spouses were born after their son); Frans Goosen (I checked the certificate on this and 25 Mar 1858 is an indexing error for his birth. He was born on the 24th); Jakob van 't Hoff and Johanna Slager (Johanna born after son was born); Marinus Goossen and Maria de Jonge (Maria born after their son).

When you do reupload your gedcom, on the Family Matches tab when the families are shown side-by-side you can choose to add your data to the existing page. By default, the data from your gedcom will not be added (for these matched pages only). You must actively check the box next to the data you want to include. Also, as you are comparing data, you can choose to uncheck the box next to data that is on the existing page that is less accurate than yours.

For example: Marinus Goossen and Dina Van Houten. You have a christening date of 26 DEC 1694 that is more accurate than the Birth date of ABT 1701 that is on the existing page. You could check the box next to your data and uncheck the box next to the birth data. Another example is Willem Goossen and Wilhelmina Kilwinger, if you want your sources to import, you'll need to check the boxes next to them. With each family match, when you are done checking all the little boxes, scroll to the bottom of the page and press the Update button. --Jennifer (JBS66) 06:49, 6 January 2012 (EST)

Hi Jennifer, thanks. No more time needed. I think I've lost interest, (re)publication on WR is too burdensome for me.--Govegus 05:36, 23 January 2012 (EST)

Dag Govegus!

Alvast bedankt! Edwin--Edwin 16:56, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
