I am getting messages that people have been changing my database who have nothing to do with my database. What is this all about?--Ellen 00:07, 11 January 2009 (EST)

Hi, This is a wiki. It is a collaboration site. Everyone is invited to share what they know. You may find that you are connected to more people than you thought and some of your cousins have the answers to questions that have puzzled you for a long time. You can still keep "your" info on your desk top but harvest what your cousins contribute.  :)

I noticed you have places for photos on your pages but no photos. Do you need help getting them to upload or getting them on your page? --sq 10:37, 5 June 2009 (EDT)

I deleted my family file, and am no longer active. I had no trouble uploading pictures, but just hadn't done it. I don't know how to remove everything from the site.--Ellen 11:00, 5 June 2009 (EDT)

wiki - to use this format or not [8 June 2009]

Hi Ellen,

I don't know if you are still watching this page or not, but I was surprised that more folks did not respond to your comments on sharing/leaving. But since they didn't, I will. I was drawn to this site because of a desire for a collaborative site to work on with other researchers. There is a group of us researching one name and we've found it difficult to keep our data synchronized. So I've been watching this site evolve for about a year. (Since it's not a commercial site with a lot of programmers hurrying to get it to market, it evolves slower than commercial sites.)

Yes, others can change the info that you have posted and that can be disconcerting if you are not expecting it. But WeRelate does offer the opportunity (when you discover that someone else has different info or different ideas about a family) to open that up for discussion on the 'talk' page. Each author can say why they believe such and such and so explore the reasons for the differences. This discussion then can be a help to anyone else coming later, that may need to see this discussion to know what to believe. Or perhaps the later viewer has more to add.

I agree that whoever changed your data should have left a reason why - or you could have asked them, since it is easy to see who changed it and click on their name to go to their 'talk' page. WeRelate seems to have had very little malicious changing because of the ease with which a page can be reverted to the way it was before the change. Also because most folks interested in even being on a genealogy site are good folks!

I do like what a previous poster said 'the more we share, the more we know'. But also agree that wiki isn't for everybody. But I like the ability to talk about our differences so others can also know and can make better evaluations. On my Jackson website, I have a whole section called "Conflicting Data" where I state the conflicts and how I arrived at my conclusions. Eventually, I'll get this posted on WeRelate. --Janiejac 09:55, 8 June 2009 (EDT)
