Next step: Review your GEDCOM [18 January 2010]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded complete1182010.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Your Gedcom File [18 January 2010]

Hello and welcome to WeRelate. Thank you for submitting a gedcom file. I have reviewed your file and see that it contains many living people. On a public wiki such as this, we do not create pages for living people as all identifying information has to be surpressed. The system tries to identify living people using a set of date rules. But many of your people have no dates. Please review your Person and Family tabs and check the exclude box for any people who might be living. You also have a few duplicate families indicated on the Warning tab. Please check and exclude one of the pair if these are really duplicates. Enjoy. --Judy (jlanoux) 10:38, 18 January 2010 (EST) (WeRelate volunteer)

I forgot to mention...I have returned your file to User Review status. When you have finished working on it, please go to the Import tab and click Ready to Import again. --Judy (jlanoux) 10:40, 18 January 2010 (EST)

Please provide sources [18 January 2010]

I just undid four pages that you changed because you

  1. did not provide sources: A lack of sources, or citing websites like ancestry and ancestral files is not considered good genealogy. Changes to existing data should be supported by citing higher quality sources than is there already. While there is always an analysis of all sources that must take place, generally, highest quality would be documents recorded contemporary to the event versus after the fact; original records or photo-quality copies versus transcriptions or family tradition; government or institutional records versus published genealogies.
  2. created duplicate pages for people who already existed: WeRelate uses a unified family tree with one page for each person, forcing its users to reach a consensus. All reasonable attempts to find an existing page should be made before adding a new page. If the page exists, but the data is wrong, change it on the page, but see point #1.
  3. made insignificant changes that represented no real change: First, adding a birth date of 1659 is somewhat imprecise. If you know the precise date, give it, don't simply give the year. If, as I suspect, you mean around 1659, then be sure to say "Abt. 1659" to be accurate. In both cases, attach a source, or if the date is estimated, attach a note explaining how the estimate was arrived at. Finally, if you meant "Abt. 1659" for Abigail Wyamn, then the existing value of Abt. 1660 was probably sufficient, and changing it was not really necessary.

It looks like you are new to Werelate. So, if any of this seems confusing, simply add a comment asking any questions this generates and I will be happy to elaborate. --Jrich 18:14, 18 January 2010 (EST)

Incorrect information on your gedcom [19 January 2010]

Hello, I am one of the volunteer administrators on WeRelate. I noticed on my watchlist that you attached one of the people in your gedcom, Sarah Hadley, b. 16 Aug. 1630 to this family:

Joshua Hadley and MaryRowland

Since Joshua Hadley and Mary Rowland were married in 1725, they obviously could not have been the parents of Sarah, born 95 years earlier. I have removed Sarah Hadley as a child of Joshua and Mary Rowland. Please try to be more careful when reviewing your gedcom and only merge families on WeRelate that MATCH the information on your gedcom. If you find that the information on your gedcom differs greatly from the families already loaded on WeRelate, it is recommended that you check the sources of your information and see if it is thoroughly researched before re-loading.

Also, after viewing several people on your latest gedcom, it is HIGHLY recommended that you only load gedcoms for families that are thoroughly researched and that include dates (birth/death/marriage, etc.) and places. Gedcoms that are poorly researched or incomplete should not be loaded onto WeRelate.

If you have any questions regarding the gedcom review process, there are tuturials and instructions available, at the following link: Help:Review_GEDCOM.

Thanks for your assistance and best regards,
