Working hard on fixing the problems with Christiansen Gedcom so it can be used--BMC 06:48, 6 October 2011 (EDT)

Next step: Review your GEDCOM [5 October 2011]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded Christiansen.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two weeks to give you time to review it.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Christiansen Gedcom [6. okt 2011]

I have reviewed your gedcom and see some problems. Your gedcom contains duplicate families and other errors that must be fixed. There also appears to be a number of people with no names (such as one born on 28 Dec 1863). We will not be able to use this file in its current condition unfortunately. We recommend that you use the Warning tab as a work list and fix the problems in your personal database first. Not all warnings represent real problems, but most do. Once you've corrected the problems, remove this gedcom (click "Remove this GEDCOM" from the Overview tab), and upload a corrected one.

Please review the videos and tutorials to become familiar with WeRelate. WeRelate is not just a collection of user files like most gedcom sites. WeRelate is a single, shared database with a single web page created for each person and each family. As a courtesy to other users, we request that problems be fixed prior to importing your file.

After correcting problems and uploading a new gedcom, the next step is to review potential matches between people in your gedcom and existing pages on WeRelate. If a person in your gedcom already has a page in WeRelate, you must match them. We ask that you use caution and review the existing page before making changes to it. Some pages have been worked on extensively by WeRelate users. Others, quite frankly, are a mess because of earlier gedcoms dumped into the database. You are encouraged to help clean these up, but we ask that you include sources for your data. If you have any questions, you can reply here. I will be watching your Talk Page. --Jennifer (JBS66) 06:33, 6 October 2011 (EDT)

Working hard on fixing the problems with the christiansen gedcom--BMC 06:50, 6 October 2011 (EDT)

Thank you. One suggestion I have is that you not match your places quite yet. You will end up needing to re-do this when you upload your corrected gedcom. When you do work again on places, please note this from Place:Denmark: "From 1900-1970 Denmark was divided into 18 growing to 21 counties. In 1970 the counties were re-organized into 14 counties, which are labeled as "modern counties." In 2006 the counties were abolished and replaced by five regions. The standard at WeRelate is to title Danish place pages according to their pre-1970 county when it is known, with also-located-in links to the modern county when it is known."
Lastly, you may want to consider adding a few families by hand, just to become familiar with how Person, Family, and Place pages work on WeRelate. If you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to ask! --Jennifer (JBS66) 06:58, 6 October 2011 (EDT)

Thanks for the tip.I Was thinking about the same thing with places if I had to do them over when the new gedcom is ready--BMC 07:03, 6 October 2011 (EDT)

--WeRelate agent 06:00, 16 October 2011 (EDT)

I can`t correct the last warnings in the christiansen gedcom . I´ve looked at them and changede the info on my desktop tree and downloaded the new gedcom to werelate.org The warnings is about husband and wife with the same last name . In Denmark really many people have the same lastname. They are born with the given name Jensen and then marry a guy with the same lastname the same thing with Nielsen, Pedersen, Jørgensen, Sørensen, Rasmussen, or they marry a cousin with the same lastname.--BMC 12:17, 16 October 2011 (EDT)

That is ok. The "same surnames" warning is primarily for U.S. users who incorrectly list the spouses as having the same surname based upon census data. I am curious about something that I see in your gedcom. You have a significant number of people with no names (but you do have their birth and/or death dates). Why are there no names associated with them? --Jennifer (JBS66) 12:55, 16 October 2011 (EDT)

It´s the program I use on my desktop that delete the names of the persons and places but not the dates in the edit pages of the persons. When I look at the tree all the names are there but when I look in the persons edit page all gone. I,Ve corrected the ones I´ve found while edit the warnings, but it will take me quite a while to find them all but they will be put in the tree when I find the names--BMC 13:17, 16 October 2011 (EDT)

Wow, that is odd. It's actually deleting them on your desktop program, as opposed to the program failing to include them in the gedcom? What software do you use?
I believe that we may need to exclude all of the people/families from the gedcom that have no names, and then import the rest (which will be only a few families). If we import families with no names, they will be titled Unknown and Unknown. Then, you would need to rename every person and family page when you do locate the names. This would be double the work for you. Also, having pages on WeRelate with no names makes it harder for other users to locate and collaborate on. --Jennifer (JBS66) 13:28, 16 October 2011 (EDT)

Do you mean software for the desktopprogram or the computer ? I´ts fine with me that we exclude the persons with no names but is it me that have to do that in the familie tab ?--BMC 13:37, 16 October 2011 (EDT)

I´ve just notised that the missing names of the persons is standing in the referenses link at the persons page when I use the link in the peoples tab--BMC 13:47, 16 October 2011 (EDT)

Which references link? I don't believe that your gedcom has the names for these people in it, so they won't display on WR.
To answer your previous question, I mean the software you are using for your genealogy, the one that produced this gedcom. It's very unusual for a program to delete names and places.
You can exclude people/families during the gedcom review process. I would suggest starting on the People tab. You can sort by Name by clicking on the Name column header. Then you can scroll down and click each Exclude check box (if is not already) for people with no names. Also make sure that people who are living are also excluded. Then, you can move to the Families tab and scroll through those, and click the Exclude check box for any that have no husband's name or wife's name listed. --Jennifer (JBS66) 14:00, 16 October 2011 (EDT)

I´m useing My heritage.com . There is a reference notice together with some off the people wich tells where I got the information from I`m pretty good remembering names so I remember them when I see different things about that person and the names. I´M allready on it on excluding persons and familys--BMC 14:20, 16 October 2011 (EDT)

I`m ready to import the Christiansen gedcom .But I can`t use the button in the import tab to do it ?--BMC 07:16, 17 October 2011 (EDT)

I believe the button is disabled because the system wants you to actively click on each warning to ensure you've read them. I can override that and import the file. First though, can you take a look at the names of the following people? Usually in WR, person pages are titled Firstname Lastname (#). I know that not all names fall into this neat structure. I am not familiar with Danish naming practices, but the following names contain parenthesis or question marks - which aren't recommended for titles. You can Edit each page and put any nicknames as Alt Names (by clicking on Add alternate name) - and list only the Primary name in the Preferred name fields.

  • Andreasen(Christensen), Anders Helmuth
  • Christensen, Chr.
  • Jacobsen ?, Kirstine
  • Jensen ( Vide ), Jens
  • Michelsdatter (Bacher), Neel

Lastly, if you go to the Family Matches tab - there was 1 family that you matched. In order for your data to be imported for that family, you need to check the box next to each item of data. So, for Lars Jensen Bjerg, if you want to import his birth Date: 1757 Place: Tved, Hjardemaal, Nordjylland, Denmark, you need to click the box next to that data. Then, scroll down to the bottom of the page and press the Update button. Let me know when you are done, and I'll import the file. Thanks! --Jennifer (JBS66) 09:03, 17 October 2011 (EDT)

Christianshavn [21 October 2011]

Hello BMC, I noticed that you created a page: Place:Christianshavn. This place will need to be renamed to include the full place hierarchy. I think, based upon other Denmark places on WR, this would be Place:Christianshavn, København, Denmark - but that is just a guess :) You can rename the place by going to Place:Christianshavn and clicking on "Rename" from the menu on the left. If you are using WR in Danish, the link may say "Move" instead. Thanks, --Jennifer (JBS66) 07:53, 20 October 2011 (EDT)

Sorry about that , I have tried to change it but it won´t let me do it--BMC 03:49, 21 October 2011 (EDT)

If you go to Place:Christianshavn, there is a menu on the left side of the screen. In that menu is a link that says Rename (if you are using WR in English) or Move (if you are using WR in Danish). When you click on that link, the next screen will give you an option to change the page to a new title. If you still experience problems, let me know. I could rename this page, but being able to rename pages is an important feature of WR, so I'd rather step you through the process.
On another note, I wanted to mention that I added a few new User Language templates to WR yesterday (one of which is Danish). If you are interested in adding this to your user page, there are instructions on each template at Category:Language templates. --Jennifer (JBS66) 06:17, 21 October 2011 (EDT)

Duplicate families [3 December 2011]

Hi BMC,

When you have a moment, please take a look at your Duplicates List by going to My Relate>Show Duplicates. It’s a good idea to check this list on a regular basis. There is a family there that is a potential match. We have an ongoing site-wide project to merge duplicates, but it is always better if somebody familiar with the families can make the merge. Here is our help page on merging. If you have any questions, just let me know. Thanks! --Jennifer (JBS66) 18:10, 3 December 2011 (EST)
