Welcome

Welcome to WeRelate, your virtual genealogical community. We're glad you have joined us. At WeRelate you can easily create ancestor web pages, connect with cousins and other genealogists, and find new information.

Video Tour

We strongly recommend that you spend a few minutes taking our video tour. It provides a brief overview of how to use the features of WeRelate. A little time spent here may save you time later. There are also in-depth text tutorials available from the Help button.

Create Webpages

The next thing to do is launch Family Tree Explorer, then select File in the Family Tree Explorer menu and give your family tree a name. You can either upload your GEDCOM or create person and family pages one at a time. To upload your GEDCOM, select File in the Family Tree Explorer menu and then click on Import and choose the GEDCOM file to import. The system will create an editable web page for each person and family in your GEDCOM. To create a page manually, select Add in the Family Tree Explorer menu and click on Add new person; enter the given (first name) and surname (last name), select Add, then fill in the blanks and save.

The Family Tree Explorer is a Flash application and will need to use some space in your computer to cache the files. That's computer talk for "If you store some ancestor page information on your computer, you will be able to view more pages faster. Otherwise, the system has to fetch each page every time you edit or look at it. This would make navigating your tree very slow.

Connect with other genealogists

You should always sign in when you are editing or adding pages. Use the signature button (second button from the right in the menu bar above the edit box) to sign your comments on discussion pages. That way others with similar interests can find you. If you click on the blue user name on any page, you will go to that person's home page. You can leave a message on his/her Discussion page. The Discussion page button is in the light green second level menu bar above.

Shared research pages

Shared research pages act like specialized message boards. Be careful to use only one name spelling and one location in each field; do not use abbreviations. Including postal codes and multiple spellings, names, or locations in these fields will cause your pages to be improperly indexed. It will make it harder for your cousins to find your pages and work with you. For more information see Shared research pages.

Hingworly to Holsworthy [5 July 2014]

I admit Holsworthy is a guess. But I did some work on Devon in general just the other week and, as you say, Hingworly doesn't seem to exist.

Here is a list of all the H's from Vision of Britain's list of Devon's 19th century and earlier places:

Haccombe
Haccombe-with-Combe
Halberton
Halwell
Halwill
Harberton
Hartland
Hatherleigh
Heanton Punchardon
Heavitree
Hemyock
Hennock
High Bickington
High Bray
Highampton
Highley St Mary
Highweek
Hittisleigh
Hockworthy
Holcombe Burnell
Holcombe Rogus
Hollacombe
Holne
Holsworthy
Honeychurch
Honiton
Horwood
Huish
Huntsham
Huntshaw
Huxham

No Hingworly, but there is Hockworthy as well as Holsworthy.

Have you any idea where it might be in the county? Could I have a look at the census? I mean, did you find it in Ancestry or another website where one can see images of the originals? I have a worldwide sub to Ancestry and one for S&N as well, so if you can point me in the right direction....I'd be pleased to have a look.

I think it's probably the most likely. He married in Okehampton which is 20 miles from Holsworthy. The west country accent is very strong and could easily be misinterpreted by the census enumerator if he was new to the area. My Reynolds' becomes Runnalls' down there. I have visited both places (I live in the UK) and it's a beautiful part of the world. I need to dig into the parish records but this is not my direct line so a low priority.--4foster 20:09, 5 July 2014 (UTC) I can email you a jpg of the census return or can I attach it to this somehow?

I found it, thanks. And this: 1891 Name: William Brailey Relation: Head... Spouse: Beatrice Brailey (19)... Address: 11 Crochers Row ... Age: 20... Born In: 1871... Profession: Copper Miner... Birth Place: Waytown Gingerly, Cornwall...

William must have mumbled as much as his dad 10 years earlier. This entry is also from Calstock in Gunnislake, just like the 1881. I used "The Genealogist" to find it.

This is being written to you from Buckinghamshire! At one time I thought my paternal-paternal line was from the Devon-Cornwall border because there are an awful lot of Lyles between Holsworthy and Stratton, so I inspected the area pretty hard too. (Very peculiar to wander through an overgrown churchyard where there were more Lyles than I had ever met in my life!) But a few years later I finally found them near Malton in Yorkshire.

Have you checked FamilySearch recently? They have so much more than they used to, even if one has to depend on other people's transcriptions.

Your brief note of 13 Jul 2014 [14 July 2014]

The discussion about Alexander Kennedy and Jane McEwan had nothing to do with your family that I could see either. I have written to regivens but as yet not received a reply.

I am now looking at Scottish places and saw some more of your family in the process. I made only a few changes to places there.

One of us (you or me) may have ticked a "watch" box when we didn't intend to. --Goldenoldie 06:03, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Living Individuals? [19 March 2015]

I am going through pages that were uploaded by GEDCOM in the early days of WeRelate before all the edits were in place. One of my goals is to delete living individuals, as they are not allowed on WeRelate. I notice that you have at least one individual whose dates are not given and who was born since 1905 (the cutoff for "lving" if death info is not given).

Before I go ahead and delete this individual (and others like it), I thought I would ask to see if you have any information on whether or not the person is still living. If you know the person is deceased, please indicate this in the death date (I think you can just enter "deceased"). Got to run - the person is Alan West.--DataAnalyst 13:53, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
