Salmon
Ucuzoglu

I was born on January 2, 1951 to a family of Sephardi Jews, on both sides, from Turkey, ultimately by way of Spain. My parents were Mair and Rebecca Ucuzoglu (no middle names). Both spoke Ladino. My father's family's original surname was 'Salmon' with the 'L' pronounced (presumably a variant of 'Solomon'). I was born 'Nathan Salmon Ucuzoglu', but I long ago restored the family surname by interchanging my middle and last names. As Turkish citizens, my father's family was forced to take on a Turkish last name: Ucuzoglu. I was named after my grandfather, who never acknowledged that his name had been legally changed and continued to go by 'Nathan Salmon'. (He used the nickname 'Latan'. By contrast, I am known as 'Nathan' to all who know me.) My father's mother was Revka Salmon. My mother was born 'Rebecca Sene', although her family's original surname in Turkey was 'Chene' (perhaps related to 'Cheney'). My mother's parents were Isaac Sene and Emily Sene (nee' Peres). Isaac was an expert oud player and was very well known in various Sephardi synagogues in the Los Angeles area, especially from the 1950's through the 1970's. There is an article on me on Wikipedia.
