During the buildup of World War I, they were arrested and executed as French spies. Their son, Frank, lived with an uncle for a while. The uncle gained control of the family finances, and Frank left.
Frank worked as a cabin boy crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
Frank was in the Navy during World War I. He was a carpenter, and stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Station.
