Jacob Lesher's wife Mary Coffman was a daughter of George Kaufmann and Magdalena Hochwaerter. Both were from Frederick, Frederick Co., Md and came to Randolph (now Barbour) in about 1803-1805. Thereafter George's name appears as Coffman. In 1810 his family is listed in the Randolph Co., VA census under his son Jacob Coffman's name. Hoater was frequent from 1810 to about 1830 when that family and his childrens' families came to be known as Hovatter. Other siblings of Christopher also came to the area now known as Cove Dist., Barbour Co., but that is a complex story involving the "Auvil/Auville/Auvel/ Ovel/Abel" family, the Cox family, the Wilson family and probably the Haller (pronounced usually Holler) family. More later if you wish to explore this line which goes back to Howarter or similar variants in Germany & Switzer- land. Said family appears to have survived only in the U.S. and Austria and/or Hungary. Hoverter, Hovater and Howerter are other variants in the U.S. This Kaufmann line remains in some mystery but was definitely in Frederick , Md. area for about a generation before George came to Randolph Co. -Nicholas Sturm Nick_Sturm@msn.com
