The agricultural schedules of the US Census are different from the population schedules, much less well known, but for those of a historical bent are a valuable supplement to your research. They report the acreage and production and economic value produced by each farmer in a vast two-page format. In any given year, you can use them to compare your ancestor or relative to his or her farm neighbors. If your ancestor or relative remained in the same place for two or more of the 1850-1880 censuses, you can see how well he or she was able to improve the farm over that time.

Agricultural schedules are less accessible than population schedules; here are some locations where they can be found.

Illinois If memory serves, the agricultural schedules for St. Clair County, Illinois, can be found in the Belleville Public Library.

Ohio agricultural schedules can be found at the State Library of Ohio in Columbus -- I think [1].

Vermont agricultural schedules can be found at the Bailey-Howe Library, 2nd floor, microforms room, University of Vermont in Burlington. When I visited in September 2007, they were in the drawer below the population schedules, and the drawer wasn't clearly marked.
