Will of William Huston of Lee Co VA :"In the name of God Amen, I , William Huston , of the County of Lee in the State of Virginia ,being sick and weak of body but of perfect mind and memory. Thanks be given unto God calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and Testament. That is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it, and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a decent Christian burial at the direction of my Executors nothing doubting but the final Resurrection I shall receive the same again, by the mighty power of God. And as touching such worldly estate where with it has pleased God to bless me in this life I give , devise, and dispose of the same in the following manner and form.

  • First, I give and bequeath to my dearly beloved wife , one negro woman named Bethiah and her daughter, Delilah, and one negro boy , named Bill, during her natural life, together with the plantation whereon I now live, and at her decease, my well beloved Samuel EWIN to have said plantation, which I purchased of Joseph MARTIN;
  • and William CARTER and William EWIN to have the tract of land which I purchased of Oliver HUSE, to be divided between them,
  • and further it is my will that any of the negro women which I conveyed away by deed of Gift before the date of this instrument of writing which has children before I let things go to the proprietors of such women, are not to have said children.
  • It is my will that my well beloved granddaughter, Polly EWEN, to have my Cupboard at her grandmother's decease,
  • and also that Stephen EWENS wife, formerly Polly CARTER, one feather bed and furniture,
  • also it is further my wish at the decease of my wife, Mary HUSTON, and at the time that samuel EWEN shall take possession of the above mentioned plantation whereon I now live, that he, the said samuel EWIN, is to pay to my son-in-law , Charles CARTER , four hundred dollars,
  • also it is my wish that at my decease, all the remainder of my property not above mentioned nor otherwise conveyed away, to be sold to the highest bidder and the money equally divided among the children of Sarah CARTER and Polly EWEN
  • and also at the decease of my wife, whatever property she may have in her possession at her death also. I wish to be as aforesaid and the money to be divided equally as above mentioned among the said children of Sarah CARTER and Polly EWEN.

I also make ordain and constitute my well beloved son-in-laws, Charles CARTER and Samuel EWEN , and likewise my trusty friend, Peter FULKERSON, the sole executors of this my last will and Testament, and I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke and disannul all and every other and former Testaments, wills, and Executors by me in anywise before named, willed and bequeathed, ratifying and confirming this and no ther to be my last will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this fourth day of May one thousand Eight hundred and sixteen.
