1675. FRANCIS, Portsmouth 1631, of the men sent over by Mason,
was of Exeter 1639 to 46, rem. to Dover, prob. d. 1647, when, perhaps,
his wid. Thomasine (with childr. Benjamin, Walter, and Martha, wh. m.
first a Snell, and next, a Browne), was on the est. he purchas. 1640 of
William Beard. Descend. wh. write the name Mathes are nam. and
respect. HUGH, Newbury, m. 28 Aug. 1683, Mary Emerson, had
John, b. 26 Feb. 1688; Judith, 30 Apr. 1689, Joanna, 19 Apr. 1690;

JAMES, Charlestown 1634, prob. rem. bef. 1639 to Yarmouth, where
he had Samuel, b. 1 May 1647; Sarah, 21 July 1649; Esther, 8 Jan.
1651; perhaps more ds. but certain. six more s. of wh. only John and
Benjamin are nam. to me, the latter being youngest s. and progenit. of
all wh. remain on the Cape, as Otis instr. us; was rep. 1664. Prob. his w.
was Sarah, d. of William Hedge; and his d. Esther m. 10 June 1695, Daniel
Willard, both parties hav. past mid. age. JOHN, Roxbury, had Gershom, b.
25 July 1641, perhaps bapt. but the rec. of ch. prior to Dec. is lost; and Elizabeth
14, bapt. 22 Oct. 1643. Ellis, in his Hist. 123, follow. the erron.
suppos. of Farmer, a. his rem. to Springfield, and adds that he
was excomm. for drunken. Now that censure was on 1 May 1659,
many yrs. later than his namesake was at S. but then he ought to have
turned over the ch. vol. very little, and seen that he was restor. to his
honora. relation 29 Dec. 1660. He was freem. 18 May 1642, when
the Col. rec. spells it Mathis. JOHN, Rehoboth, perhaps rem. to Springfield,
m. 1644, Pentecost Bond, had two ch. wh. d. one Sarah, bur. 7
Jan. 1650, and the w. was k. by the Ind. 5 Oct. 1675. He was fined
two or three times for drunken. but that frailty would not fully prove
his ident. with the preced. He m. sec. w. and had s. wh. d. young, and

Barry thinks, in 1681, m. Mary, d. of Jonathan Johnson, had Lydia, b.

and Daniel, Mar. 1697. His w. d. 22 June 1710, and he m. 1713,
Sarah Garfield. MARMADUKE, Malden, was s. of Matthew of
Swansea, in Glamorgansh. and in his 18th yr. matric. 20 Feb. 1624. at
