agree with Farmer in mak. him freem. on 2 May of that yr. imply of
course that he had come as early as 1637, when the prefix of resp. is
wanting to this name next yr.; however it may be that he came not bef.
1639, in wh. yr. he had gr. of 200 acres at Ipswich, to the outlying
farmers of wh. town, in 1641, at the place call. New Meadows, he began
to preach. This was 8 or 9 yrs. bef. the incorp. by its present name,
nor was a ch. allow. to be gather. there bef. 1645, as Winthrop II. 254,
tells, so that prob. K. was discourag. at least bef. 1648 we kn. he went
home. Mather, putting him into his first classis of min. found no
Christian name for him, yet as above twenty others of the same list
show the same deficiency, we may be sure, he did not much inquire.
Of this name, had, in 1834, eight been gr. at the var. N. E. coll. yet
none at Harv.

    KNOCKER, GEORGE, and THOMAS, misprint. thus in Geneal. Reg.
III. 80 for Knower of Charlestown.

    KNOLLYS, HANSERD, Dover, was b. it is said, 1598 At Cawkwell in
Co. Lincoln, bred at the Univ. of Cambridge, ord. 23 June 1629, as a
priest by the Bp. of Peterborough, renounc. the ch. of Eng. in 1636,
and in 1638 came to N. E. tho. some Eng. books say a yr. earlier. On
arr. at Boston, he w as refus. permis. of resid. thro. suspic. of antinom.
taint, so that he went to N. H. jurisdict. and in 1641 home, reach. London
24 Dec. See Winthrop I. 326; II. 27. Yet Brook's Lives of the
Purit. III. sub voce, with Crosby's Hist. of Bapt. I. 334, furnish. more
favora. views of his charact. and even Mather's Magn. III. 6 refers to
the d. of the "goodman in a good old age;" while in our times an
Assoc. in Eng. of the Bapt. Commun. honors the confessor by adopt.
the title of the Hanserd Knollys' Soc.

    KNOTT, GEORGE, Sandwich 1637, perhaps rem. thither from Lynn,
d. 1, bur. 3 May 1648, leav. wid. Martha, s. Samuel, and d. Martha, wh.
he wish. Thomas Dunham to m. as in his nuncup. will of that date
express. but she m. 18 Nov. 1650, Thomas Tobey. JAMES, a soldier on
Conn. riv. 1676, under capt. Turner. RICHARD, Marblehead 1678, a
surg. with prefix of resp. He prob. had w. Ruth.

    KNOWER, GEORGE, Charlestown 1631, may have come in the fleet
with Winthrop liv. on the Malden side, d. 13 Feb. 1675, leav. prop. to w.
Elizabeth s. Jonathan, b. 1645, and d. Mary Mirable. He, or rather his w.
(for the men were too timid) unit. in the petit. 28 Oct. 1651, to the Gen.
Court, in favor of Rev. Mr. Matthews. Frothingham, 81, 85, 126. In
his will of 3 Dec. 1674 he calls hims. a. 67 yrs. of age. He ment. in it
ano. d. w. of Moses Bucknam. JONATHAN, Malden, freem. 1690, spell.
