Haven, 13, says, to Hampton. JOHN, Salem 1638, perhaps earlier, had
gr. of ld. 1639, was the freem. of 13 May 1640, is by tradit. said to be
from Dorsetsh. but more prob. was that tailor from Canterbury, Co. Kent,
wh. came in 1636, perhaps br. of Henry, bef. ment. by w. Mary had at
S. John, bapt. Jan. 1639, d. at 7 yrs.; Mary, Sept. 1640; Abigail, 12
Feb. 1643; Hannah, 23 June 1644, d. soon; Hannah, again, 25 May
1645; John, again, 23 June 1650; and Joseph, 8 May 1653; and d. 13
Nov. 1675, his w. Elizabeth hav. a. three days bef. unless some confus. of
name exist in the report. In his will of 1673, w. Elizabeth s. John, and Joseph,
d. Hannah Corning, and gr. ch. John Cressy are ment. JOHN, Reading,
freem. 1666, had Jonathan, wh. d. 4 Dec. 1653; David; and John, but the
order of b. is not seen, beside Samuel, wh. d. 20 Mar. 1662, the mo. Rebecca
hav. d. sixteen days bef. and he d. May 1676. Of ano. JOHN, freem. 1670, it is
not kn. where he liv. but it may well seem, that he was s. of the preced. bec. he
d. at Reading, 1705. JOHN, Salem, prob. s. of the first John, m. 14 Aug.
1673, Mary Herrick, perhaps d. of Zechary, had John b. 26 Apr. 1675;
and Jonathan, 29 Mar. 1678; beside Josiah, 6 Mar. 1680; and he d. 6 Aug.
1684, and the wid. d. within two wks. aft. Ano. JOHN, at Salem 1692, was
one of the jurors in the sad witchcraft trials, and recant. magnanimous. from their
damnable verdicts. John p.,late Presid. of the Berksh. Med. Inst. and other descend.
of this stock give,uniform. spell. of their name Batchelder. JOSEPH, Salem, a tailor,
perhaps, elder br. of John the first, came, 1636, from Canterbury, Co. Kent, with
w. Elizabeth one ch. and three serv. acc. the certif. of the Mayor of Sandwich,
where they, emb. was freem. Mar. 1638; rem. to Wenham, of wh.
he was rep. 1644. What was the name of the ch. he brot. or whether he
had more on our side of the water, or w hen he d. are unkn. JOSEPH,
Charlestown, s. of William, m. 22 Dec. 160, Agnes, wid. of William
Gillingham. JOSEPH, Salem, youngest s. of the first John of the same, m.
8 Oct. 1677, Miriam Moulton, had Joseph, b. 18 July foll. JOSHUA,
Ipswich, br. of Henry, of the same, came from Kent, but no more can be
heard of him, exc. that he had at least three ch. John, Elizabeth and Hannah
Warner, w. of Daniel of the same, entit. to sh. in the est. of his br. Henry.
MARK, Wenham, freem. 1663, may have been s. of the preced. or not,
was a soldier in the comp. of Gardner, and in the great battle of 19 Dec.
1675 was k. with his capt. NATHANIEL, Hampton, eldest s. of the Rev.
Stephen
, b. a. 1611, m. 1656 Deborah, d. of John Smith, and had, it is
said, seventeen childr. (only nine by her), many of whose names it might
be not easy to find, but one was Nathaniel. At Woburn he took sec. w.
31 Oct. 1676, Mary Wyman, wid. of John, and d. of Rev. Thomas Carter,
had eight ch. and from Coffin's gatherings in Geneal. Reg. VI. 207
we learn that he had third w. Elizabeth She was wid. of John Knill of Charlestown,
m. 23 Oct. 1689. STEPHEN, Lynn, the first min. there,
b. a. 1561, came to Boston in the William and Francis, 5 June 1632,
from London, preach. at L. next yr. was freem. 6 May 1635, and next yr.
was at Ipswich, perhaps at Yarmouth 1637, but in 1638 went to Newbury,
in 1639 to Hampton, whence in 1641 he was dism. and some time after
may be heard of at Saco. Willis, I. 37. Finally in 1653 or 4 he went
home, leav. third w. Mary here, wh. pray. for div. in 1656, bec. he was
