Transcription 1.
July 24, 1740.
"John Maxwell came into Court and made oath that he
imported himself, Margaret, John, Jr.. Thomas, Mary and Alexander
Maxwell from Ireland to Philadelphia, and from thence to this Colony, at
his own expense, and that this is the first time of his proving his rights
in order to obtain land. Which is ordered to be certified."

imported himself Margret John Junr [r is a superscript and there's something written above John Junr that I can't make out] Thomas Mary & Alexr [r is a superscript]
Maxwell, from Ireland to Philadelphia and from thence into this Colony at
his own charge & that this is the first time of his proving his and their right,
in order to obtain Land wch [ch is a supercript, i.e., which] is ordered to be certified"

"He later removed to Augusta County and became one of the first justices of Botetourt
when that county was organized. When Rockbridge was organized
his lands fell into that county. He was a man of prominence west of the
Blue Ridge and gave substantial aid in wresting the country from the

The above passage follows the quotation in Maxwell History and Genealogy concerning his importation to the New World. That importation was recorded in Orange County. later land records place him in Augusta County. However, at the time the importation was recorded in Orange County Courts, the area later known as Augusta was still part of Orange County. It is likely that he initially settled in what was at the time Orange, but later became Augusta County on Beverleys manor.
