On this 20th day of October in the year while Lord 1832, personally appeared in open Court, before the Honorable the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas, now sitting, John Walker, a resident of Hudson in the County of Portage and State of Ohio, aged sixty-eight years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth, on his oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832.

That he was born in Carlisle in the County of Cumberland in the State of Pennsylvania on the first day of October A.D. 1764, where (he believes) is [his] age is now recorded in the records of that town, as it also now in his father's family Bible.

From that place he removed to the "Spring Station" or Garrison" (so-called in Kentucky) about 6 miles South East of the Falls of Ohio River; that on the first day of August A.D. 1780 as a volunteer he entered the service of the United States, and served the two next succeeding months with eight others, selected by his Captain William McClure to furnish provisions and protection to the women and children left at & about the Spring Garrison, while that part of the Army which belonged there, were gone to attack the Indian towns on the Little Miami; and the six months thereafter he was employed in and about the erection of the Fort at the head of the Rapids of the Ohio River. That he thus served for the period of eight months in Captain William McClure's company, although a part of this period, he was under the command of Captain William Chinneth – George Roger Clark [George Rogers Clark] being the Colonel, and the number of volunteers there about forty.

That on the last day of March, or the first day of April 1781, he left the service. That his father Robert Walker during the above mentioned period, received two written discharges one signed by Captain William McClure and another by Captain John Hinkson, both of which are now in his possession, and this day exhibits here, and that his father informed him he obtained a discharge for this applicant also, but if procured it is not now in the possession of this applicant, nor does he know where it is.

That for about 18 or 19 years next succeeding the time he left said service, he resided in Hampshire County, Virginia, from thence he removed in the year 1802 Hudson, Portage County of Ohio where he has since lived and now resides.

That he has no written evidence to prove that he performed the Service as above specified, and that he knows of no person whose testimony he can procure, who can testify to his service as aforesaid, unless it be the evidence of William Walker of Stow, in said County of Portage, who is not now present at this court.

He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State, and that there is no clergyman whose attendance he can procure at this Court.

[fn p. 11: On November 14, 1845 in Summit County of Ohio, Rachel Walker, 77, filed for a widow's pension under the 1843 act stating that she is the widow of John Walker, a revolutionary war pensioner; that she married him Me 29, 1789 at Green Spring Valley Hampshire County Virginia by a minister whose name she does not recall; that her name prior to her marriage was Rachel Cochran.]

[fn p. 9]:'Robert Walker of the Township of Stow in the County of Summit and State of Ohio of Lawful age after being first duly sworn according to law deposeth and saith that I am a brother of the said John Walker deceased and that he formerly resided in Green Spring Valley Hampshire County Virginia that my Brother was a pensioner and died in Hudson Township County and State aforesaid on the 3rd day of September A.D. 1841 that the said John Walker was married to the said Rachel Cochran May A.D. 1789 in Green Spring Valley Hampshire County Virginia and that she now resides in said Hudson Township and that the said Rachel Walker has not been married since the death of her said husband John Walker and I recollect the date of the marriage from my own age which is now 72 years and I also was present at the marriage and further the affiant sayeth not.

[facts in file: the widow died October 29, 1847; there is reference in the file 2 children of the veteran and his wife including reference to a daughter in 1856 but no names are stated.]

[Veteran was pensioned at the rate of $26.66 per annum commencing March 4th, 1831, for 8 months service as a private in the Virginia militia.]
