Template talk:Cemetery Research - Ontario - General

Purpose of this template [27 September 2014]

This template is intended to be included at the end of Place pages for Cemeteries in Ontario, Canada. It will facilitate the inclusion of information about resources that MAY provide information about the given cemetery.

I invite others to comment on and to modify this template to increase the value it provides to genealogical research in Ontario.

To see an example of a page that includes this template go to Place:Immanuel Baptist Cemetery, Killaloe, Renfrew, Ontario, Canada Rick--RGMoffat 18:49, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

Rick, I really like the idea of using a template and covering off all of Ontario. However, it does seem like a whole bunch of readily available stuff is getting ignored in the current version. I also suspect the best way to execute this will be a template for each county as counties are increasingly maintaining a large number of genealogically significant inactive cemeteries and putting stuff up on the web, and OGS transcriptions tend to be available from the regional branches online. I don't yet know how to build a template which allows a variable to be specified, but I am trying to learn and will build a PECounty template once I figure out how to get it to prompt to include things like the number of OCFA indexed names for that cemetery or CemSearch totals. In the future I expect I will also do Hastings and Lennox and Addington. If you want to avoid PEC for now, it might save some of your time as I will go in and put the county specific template later. If you know how to set the template up to include a prompt for a specific variable and can tell me, that would be most appreciated. --Artefacts 16:49, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

This was a draft or proof of concept, so I did not try to build a comprehensive list of resources. Feel free to make suggestions and I can incorporate them.

I used this naming convention with the intent that the last word (General) can be replaced by county names, to build a template hierarchy that is easy to locate in searches. All entries for a given province will be grouped alphabetically in search results.

I will likely take a stab at one named "Cemetery Research - Ontario - Renfrew."

I do not have experience writing templates that use parameters. If I come across an example that helps me understand the process, I will let you know. Rick----RGMoffat 20:01, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
