Merle C. Rummel permitted several chapters of his book, "Four Mile Community" to be place online at the Church of the Bretheren Network , "so that people in the modern world may discover what life was like in a more simple time, when people knew almost everyone in town. It was truly a time of sheltered existence for many, a time for cultivating a rich heritage of family experiences when the outside world - was still the outside world." This work is reproduced here in compliance with their requirement that "This document may be reproduced, only if remaining intact, with full acknowledgement to the author." Four Mile Church was located in Montgomery County, Ohio, and so falls outside the scope of the Southwest Virginia Project. However, the Dunkards (aka "Dunkers") established themselves at an early date in the Roanoke area of Virginia; in anycase, the life-ways of the Dunkards in Virginia, would be similar to those described here. Indeed, in many respects, the life ways described here would be typical of many of the settler in Southwest Virginia, Dunkard or otherwise.
