Talk:Old Augusta Project

I've added a history icon to link to a page capturing historical information about Old Augusta.

The history page itself should be a menu linking to short articles on various historical aspects of Old Augusta Some of the components for those articles already exist, and just need to be transferred to separate articles. The reason for taking this approach is that you don't want to have all of this on a single page.

• makes it hard to read the page
• makes it hard to cross link to the information when a reference to it is needed in other articles.

Ideas for articles

• Settlement history
• History of Borden's Grant
• History of Beverly's Manor
• Early Exploration (e.g., Knights of the golden Horsehoe)
• Kerr Creek Massacre
• Old Augusta in the F&I

etc.

A lot of this would overlap with the SWVP, but the same article serving double duty in two or more places is not a problem. Might have to adjust banners. Perhaps a dual SWVP Banner combined with Old Augusta?

One could also create any number of relevant articles for this area, especially if the scope expanded to include say the Civil War. Stonewall Jackson's campaigns in the area could result in many many articles. I'm not going there, but someone might.

Quaker

The Quaker migration would be part of the overall movement of people from se PA west and south along the Great Road into the Valley of VA and then south into the Carolinas. It's not been discussed here as yet. Adding an article to weRelate about it would be a good thing.Bill Willis 06:47, 11 October 2011 (EDT)

Other icons [20 June 2009]

For symmetry, we probably need to add a couple of additional icons in the second row. Don't know what they'd link to at the moment. Suggestions for other areas? They don't have to be filled just yet, or even anytime soon. But making a space for them as temporary place holders would be good.

Headpiece [20 June 2009]

I'm keeping my eye out for a distinctive "headpiece" to replace the scroll work in the center below the Old Augusta Banner. Something regionally relevant, and distinctive. Something to help separate this from the SWVP in appearance.

Navigation Bar [29 July 2009]

I've modified the page to include a "navigation" bar in place of the table that was previously there. The navigation bar contains the same information, and in form was used elsewhere in the project. I concluded it looked better than the table, made it into a template, and can be inserted wherever needed. Eventually, if more topical areas are added to this project we may need to revisit this. I'd like to keep the Navigation bar itself fairly simple, and limited to at the most five or so links. But if there are other project areas then this may need to be revisited.---perhaps combining the navigation bar into the top row of a table that has links to other areas. Q 09:23, 28 July 2009 (EDT)

HI Jim. The Old Chester fed Old Augusta, so that's the reason its there. There's probably a place for an "Old Cumberland" as well, but that's for later. Q 13:25, 28 July 2009 (EDT)

Bill, are we using "Old Chester" as a catch-all for most of the settlers that migrated from that area in to Augusta? I belive I have more ancestors from Lancaster County (formed from Chester in 1729), than anywhere else, and since Cumberland wasn't formed until 1750 (from Lancaster), I'd think they would both still fall under the "Old Chester" banner..... Perhaps we need to re-define "Old Chester" to include the original boundaries (similar to what we've done with the Augusta County Project), when it was inclusive of Lancaster, Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lebanon, Northumberland and York (just to name a few)..... This would eliminate the need for "separate projects" for each county, and the duplication of effort that might result. Your thoughts?--Delijim 14:52, 28 July 2009 (EDT)

Hi Jim,

Chester County originally included the area westward of the Octoraro. ie, it included much of the area many of the counties you've mentioned. Personally, I'm not especially concerned about sharp delineations simply because we probably can't sharply deliminate the boundaries---everything sort of overlaps. However, when I think about Old Chester, I definitely think about it inclusive of what's now Lancaster. How much further west it might go I'm not certain. Should it include York? Berk county to the north was also part of Chester, but was cut off fairly early on, so I don't usually include it there. Lancaster is an interesting proposition, because it could certainly encompass a project all of its own---perhaps Pennsylvania Dutch? I'm not sure where to go in this direction. I slipped into Old chester because I was pursueing a particular line in SW VA. There will be lots of them like this, but I don't know that I want to go full throttle on an Old Chester Project.

I'll note that Dallan has commented on the "Project" concept and using banners on individual person pages. I feel this is needful because of the navigation needs---infact its essential. What do you think? Q 15:08, 28 July 2009 (EDT)

Bill, I think your banners look fine, no need to change them. As long as Dallan is OK with them, then I say we continue with our project banners as is. I don't know about on your screen, but the Cherokee banner on BobC's page is so wide that it pushes down all of the text about 6 inches, which is somewhat distracting to me.... I think he should downsize it so it isn't so wide. Anyway, I think Dallan encourages projects, it sets WeRelate apart from other genealogical sites and adds much in the way of information. I think the issue here is putting the banners on "person pages". Some don't like that at all. Dallan seems to be proposing to grandfather SWVP and Old Augusta, but he doesn't realize, I think, the centralness of the banner as a navigation device. Without the banner there's no way to convenient get back to other parts of the project to continue exploration. Q 18:33, 28 July 2009 (EDT)
