The name is a combination of angle "remote habitation 'and kalis' person with no fixed abode and income, poor man." In the 17th century and vagrants calissen often bracketed together in police regulations. In the literature of that time was Kalishoek a mocking and playful shaped place name for a place where people without means of subsistence belong or come from. Or as Jacob Cats put it: "You quaemt Uyt Calis corner soo naeckt gelijck a pier." To explain it ties in with a common word in Spanish gypsy language kalo 'black'. Association with bald 'destitute' and Kalis, the Dutch name of Calais, will certainly have contributed to the spread. Meant to come home so Kalis 'bare and destitute of a return trip "and go to Calles' on the road to poverty". In Andrea's Vierlingh 'Tractaet of Dyckagie "of 1576 is of dike workers said that" although most are poor calissen. Today we know mainly as Kalis surname.
