- Crank.— Local, 'of Crank.' I cannot find the spot in North Lancashire. But there is a place in Rainford, Co. Lane., called Crank, which has given name to Crank Station. Crank Hall and Crank Farm are still properties there. ' James Cranke (1746?-1826), artist, was born at Urswicfc-m-Furncss about 1 746. It is supposed that he studied in London, in the studio of his uncle, James Cranke (1717-80), and afterwards settled at Warrineton as a portrait-painter: I ii> i Nat. Biog. xiii. 17.
