The following table is from Source:Summers, 1903, and details the earliest surveys recorded for what became "Old Washington County, Virginia". Most (but not all) of these surveys appear to be speculative transactions, the land owners not personally planning on settling in the area, but establishing their rights to the land for future sale. "Indian Creek" is frequently mentioned in these records, and Summers interpreted that to refer to portions of the Holston watershed, though some of the transactions also referred explicitly to the Holston. At this early date it is not entirely clear that the survey records accurately reflect the river names of the area.
