A Gilcrest Family

p.26

In designating the different generations of the family I have used capital letters after the first and second generation, assuming these to be A. and B. So following "The Branches" are C., D., E., and F., the third, fourth, fifth and sixth generations respectively.

A Gilcrest Family The Family of James Gilchrist

James Gilchrist; Born probably prior to 1765 in York County, Pennsylvania. Married Elizabeth, daughter of Patrick Scott. Elizabeth was born in York County, Pennsylvania, May 2d, 1765. James, at an advanced age, was killed by a runaway accident. They were members of the Presbyterian church, as indicated by an old church letter sent me by one of their descendants. There were three sons of whom I have learned incidentally:

Branches
Robert Gilchrist; Born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, September 22d, 1794.
James Scott Gilchrist; Born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, in 1802.
Andrew Gilchrist; Born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, in 1804. Of this one I have had no further information.

Branch I - Robert Gilchrist

The record of this branch will be found on a following page in connection with the record of the Fleming family, a leaf of which is reproduced.

p.28

Of this family I have had correspondence with William Murray Gilcrest, the second son of Samuel Fleming Gilchrist, the second son of Robert Gilchrist. This was in 1894. At that time he located all the others at Oakland, California, except himself. He was in Cheyenne, Wyoming. You can notice here the change in the spelling of the name, for he signed his name "Gilcrest" It was the same way with Robert Scott, who was practicing medicine in Ottumwa, Iowa, and died there about 1893. I discovered the name on his office sign as I passed by. I called in to see him but he was then away for treatment for what proved to be his fatal illness. This I learned from his partner, Dr. Brockman. I afterwards called on his widow at her home, and at this time she gave me the record of the Flemings. This was published in 1868 by a minister of the Fleming name.
