Notes on editions

The first 1862 edition of this book had the title A handbook of American genealogy: being a catalogue of family histories and publications containing genealogical information, chronologically arranged. That title redirects to this page. William H. Whitmore was the author. He is also listed as the author of the 1868 and 1875 editions, but the name of the title changed to the title of this source page, with slight variations in the subtitle. By 1897, Whitmore is credited as the earlier editor, but the publishers (Joel Munsell's Sons) are given as the new editors.
