Commentary

The actual author of this work is not clear. Some bibliographic compilations list Almira Larkin White (ALW) as the author, while others list John Barber White (JBW) as the author. The title page of the copies examined show ALW as Compiler and Editor, but published by JBW, and copyrighted in his name. JBW describes himself in the foreward as having "published" the work, and dedicates it to his wife (Emma Siggins White) and children, perogatives of an author. JBW may have done most of the research, but ALW acted to bring it to publication. The work was published separately in 1913 in

  • Kansas City, MO, where JBW lived
  • Haverhill, MA, where ALW lived.

It is not clear whether there these two publications differ in any substantial way.
