User tips

This FamilySearch Record Search collection includes an online index and images from two National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) publications: M1875, Marriage records of the Office of the Commissioner, Washington Headquarters of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, 1861-1869 and M1913, Records of the field offices for the state of Virginia, Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, 1865-1872 (only marriages).

The NARA pamphlet describing publication M1875 indicates that additional marriage records are contained in records from Assistant Commissioners offices and various field offices of the Freedmen's Bureau that had not yet been microfilmed in 2002. Additional microfilming of the Freedmen's Bureau records was completed by NARA in 2007, but these field office records are not included in this collection. This collection should not be considered complete.
