England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915 is part of FreeBMD, an ongoing project, the aim of which is to transcribe the Civil Registration index of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales, and to provide free Internet access to the transcribed records. FreeBMD is itself a part of the FreeUKGEN family, which also includes FreeCEN (Census data) and FreeREG (Parish Registers).

As of Aug 2011, the FreeBMD database contains more than 205,000,000 distinct records (more than 260,000,000 total records). Access to all transcribed records & original images is available at the project's website. They are also available at Ancestry and at various other online sites.
