From the certificates index, information that may be found in this database includes certificate number, date of marriage entry into the index, marriage place, marriage date, and names of husband and wife, along with their ages and residences. Statewide vital-record registration for births, deaths, and marriages began in South Dakota in July 1905. Some earlier marriage records may be found in the office of the register of deeds of a particular county. Published records of marriages exist for Minnehaha and Pennington counties. Divorce records were recorded statewide after 1905, but earlier ones may be at the clerk of the court in the appropriate county.
