Oakland is the oldest public cemetery in the northwest quarter of Louisiana, final resting place of most of the founders and early officials of Shreveport. It's one of the few cemeteries in the U.S. included on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the surviving stones and monuments are now extremely fragile and many others have been vandalized because of the cemetery's location near the downtown area. This volume attempts to record all burials, from surviving markers, the city's survey of graves in the 1960s, the original Sexton's map of 1907, and the efforts of the Shreveport Beautification Foundation in the 1970s.
