In order to obtain a Union Army Civil War Pension, many affidavits and legal documents were required: from people who knew the couple and witnessed their marriage ceremony, doctors who delivered the babies or people who were present at the birth. This document was requested by the guardian appointed for Mary Ann Drinkwater to prove that she was the legal spouse of Humphrey.
