It is suggested this souce be used to provide a citation for a primary source document such as a birth, death or marriage certificate, certified extract of an entry in a register or a copy of an entry in a register which was issued by New Zealand Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) for an event which occurred in New Zealand.
Historical records mean information relating to:
1.Births that occurred at least 100 years ago
2.Stillbirths that occurred at least 50 years ago
3.Marriages and eventually Civil Unions that occurred 80 years ago
4.Deaths that occurred at least 50 years ago or the deceased's date of birth was at least 80 years ago.
Searching the site [i.e. the index to vital records] is free. To obtain details such as the event date, or a copy of a certificate, payment must be made.
A copy of the document can usually be obtained from BDM (with certain date limitations) either by submitting an application for most certificates online or by applying by mail to:
