Usage Tips

The Cathedral Church of Manchester played a key role in the Church of England's ecclcesiastical affairs for this area of Lancashire, and which was also one of the most populated regions in England. Nearly two hundred thousand couples married within its walls, being one of a very small number of churches in the area in which marriages were performed.

Manchester's ecclesiastical boundaries were far-reaching, having jurisdictional oversight to nearly 60 chapelries (see wiki.familysearch.org under the "**" in the "Parishes" section at A Comprehensive List of All Pre-1851 Manchester Parishes and Chapelries).

Records on microfilm at the Family History Library may be ordered through the nearest Family History Center.

Note: Most of the Manchester Cathedral registers of baptisms and marriages have been indexed/extracted and all the data is made available online at FamilySearch.org for the years 1573 to 1870; marriages to 1885.
