First appeared in two volumes in 135 and 1936, containing the genealogy of the ruling families of Europe by Wilhelm Karl Prinz von Isenburg (1903-1956). Volume I. was dedicated to "the German states" (Die deutschen Staaten) and volume 2 to "the non-German states" (Die außerdeutschen Staaten).

These two volumes were extended by by Frank Baron Freytag von Loringhoven (1910-1977) who added two volumes (1955, 1957) containing the genealogy of the higher nobility of Germany and Austria-Hungary. A fifth volume was published in 1978 from unpublished material collected by von Loringhoven, edited by Detlev Schwennicke (b. 1930). Schwennicke went on to publish further volumes under the new title of Europäische Stammtafeln. Neue Folge, beginning in 1980 (vol. VI), and as of 2011 extending to volume XVIII.
