Notes

This work is based on a travel journal kept by John Fontaine from 1710 to 1719. The Journal was prveiously published by Ann Fontaine Maury Adams Hirshfeld in 1857 in a slightly abridged form. The 1972 version by Alexander includes the entire text, and an extensive discussion of John Fontaine and his Journal. The Google Books version does not give access to the Journal itself, but does present much of the discussion.
