John Coggeshall (1601-1647) was born at Halstead, Essex County, England, the son of John Coggeshall. He immigrated to America in 1632 with his family; settled first at Roxbury, Massachusetts; moved to Boston; and then migrated to Rhode Island. He and his wife, Mary (ca. 1604-1684), had eight children, ca. 1620-1637, born in England and Massachusetts. He died at Newport, Rhode Island. Descendants lived in Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and elsewhere.
