From the portions of this work that I've examined (specifically, the chapters dealing with the Edmiston family in Southwest Virginia) Allison seems to have been a careful researcher. She consistently points to her sources for information, and reviews critically alternative interpretations of the family history. Where she reaches a conclusion, she explains what that is based on; where she does not reach a conclusion, she explains why she reserves judgment.
