There are several Snook families living in the eastern part of the United States during its earliest history. I believe that they are all distinct families and have spent some time trying to identify and separate them since their paths crossed periodically. So far, I believe there are the New York Snooks, the Pennsylvania Snooks, the Hunterdon County, NJ Snooks and the Sussex County, NJ Snooks. The latter two families may share a German homeland, but that research is yet to be done. I believe that my Snook family was part of the Palatine emigration from Germany via England in the early 1700's. I cannot yet prove a connection between these earliest Snooks and my line which I've documented as early settlers of western Maryland in what is now Allegany County(not one of those awarded a land bounty for service during the American Revolution). The clue, I believe, to my family line is the name 'Mathias' which is not commonly used among the other Snook families. This is a work still in progress, and I would appreciate input from other Snook researchers about their earliest ancestors so I can finally solve this puzzle. |
