Hays Patrick 1 10 525 1741 List of deeds recorded in Orange County executed by Benjamin Borden, 1734-1745: To...; Charles Hays, 1st June, 1742; ... Patrick Hays, 16th August, 1742; Person:Patrick Hays (1) Presumed to be Patrick (1) as he apparently held land on both Borden's Grant, and on Beverley Manor.
Hays Patrick 2 10 509 1742 Capt. John Christian's List: John Christian, ... Patt Hayes… Person:Patrick Hays (1) John Christian was on Beverley Manor, suggesting this is Patrick (1)
Hays Patrick 1 10 299 1745 Patrick Hays vs. Charles Milliken.--Debt on bond dated 4th June, 1745. Writ 19th February, 1747. Defendant of Township of Deny, County of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Person:Patrick Hays (1) If the 1745 bond date is its due date, then we can interpret this record to indicate that Patrick was in Derry Township, Lancaster County at the time the debt was incurred, and is now in Augusta. Later records suggest that Patrick returned to Lancaster County after c1762.
Hays Patrick 2 10 432 1746 Page 1.--On __ _____, 1746, Commission from Gooch to the Sheriff to Elect Twelve of the most able men of the Parish to be sworn a Vestry, the Sheriff caused to come to the Court House all the Freeholders and Housekeepers, who elected James Patton, John (S) Buchanan, John Madison, Patrick Hayes, John Christian, John Buchanan, Robert Alexander, Thomas Gordon, James Lockhart, John Archer, John Mathews, John Smith, who qualify. Teste: William Lusk, John Wilson, Charles Hays. Acknowledged, 20th August, 1747. Person:Patrick Hays (5) Looney's Mill Creek is in Bath County well to the north of Augusta County. This is perhaps an indication that Patrick owned property on both Beveley's Manor, and in Bath. But it may also be that there were two Patricks Hays' in the general area at the same time. For the moment I'm assuming these are two different persons.

Signed, Patrick Hays, William Wilson. Teste: James Stevenson, James Hughes, Wm Lusk. Patrick (1) had a son William, per his oath of importation. We currently have him as William (16), though the DOB currently given (1742) is not consistent with his importation in 1740. William (16) may be misidentified as the son of Patrick (1), but its also possible that this is a different Patrick (perhaps Patrick (5). The connection to the Lusk family, suggests a family connection with John Hays (20), who identifies a Robert Lusk in his will (probably a soninlaw). TDescendants of that John Hays are a YDNA match for descendants of Patrick (1). Further work needed.

Table Notes

The above records were extracted from Chalkley's Chronicles for persons of a specific given name (e.g "William Hays") ordered by "Year"**. Plausible spelling variants (e.g., "Wm. Hayes", "William Heas", etc) are included. In some cases plausible variants that might be typographical corruptions are included for the sake of erroring on the "safe side". For example, Chalkley gives a parenthetical note for one record indicating that he couldn't tell from the original source whether the person meant was "Hugh Keyes" or "Hugh Hayes". In this particular case, the record is probably for "Hugh Keyes", but has been included with the listing for Hugh Hays for the sake of the possibility that it really does refer to a Hugh Hays.

*The number of entries under this name in the Index to Chalkley's Chronicles. The actual number of records may be larger (most likely) or smaller, depending on the accuracy of the index. Some records in Chalkley's for the target may not appear in the index, and other records may not be located on the page described. The former records are indicated in this column with "not", standing for "not found in the index". The latter records are indicated under "text" with a "?" Note that some records, not captured in Chalkelys index, may not appear at all in this listing.
** "Year" assigned may not be the year the record was made, but the year which appears to be related to the event described associated with the person of interest. For example, if testimony was entered into the court records in the year 1836 describing the Revolutionary War record of the target, then the assigned date is not 1836 (when the record was made) but approximate date 1776 (the start of the Revolution).
***This is the current "best guess" as to the identity of the person associated with this record. Note that it is not always possible to tell who a particular records applies to. If the record includes details of the persons family, then it's easier to make the identification. Sometimes no such information is available in the record, but there will be other clues (such as adjacent neighbors, etc) that allow the identification. In any case, sometimes one "John Smith" looks pretty much like another "John Smith", so take these identifications with a healthy grain of salt.
