Teste: Mathew Huston, James Henry, John Weir. Delivered: Wm. Walker, August, 1767. Person:Hugh Hays (5) This sale occurs on the same date that Patrick (1) sells 400 acres of land to son Hugh (5), which probably means this record documents where son Hugh (5) resells a portion of the land. Hugh (1)'s wife is known to have been "Mary", and commonly identified as Mary Greenlee, so this could conceivably be a record for him but it seems unlikely that Hugh (1) would have been on Beverley Manor this late.

Hays Hugh 1 8 150 1768 AUGUST 17, 1768... (326) Hugh Hays imprisoned for debt. Person:Hugh Hays (5) Most likely Hugh (5), conceivably Hugh (1), but he was probably in PA at this time.
Hayes Hugh 3 7 538 1774 Page 209.--15th March, 1774. Hugh Hays and Mary to William Pollock. Teste: James Henry, Patrick Hay, William Moore. Person:Hugh Hays (5) Most likely Hugh (5), conceivably Hugh (1), but he was probably in PA at this time. This looks to be a land sale, perhaps selling off the remainder of the land Hugh (5) purchased from his father Patrick (1). The "Pat Hay" could be Hugh's brother, as Patrick (1) was clearly in Derry Tp PA by this date. However, we have no direct evidence that Patrick (1) had a son Patrick. In any case, shortly after this date Hugh (5) can be shown to be living in SWVA
Hays Hugh 2 6 230 1775 "[extensive deposition, trimmed] 1753. Patent, 25th July, 1788, to Andrew Lammie, 150 acres by settlement right certificate in Washington County. Andrew Lammie had a son John.... * 3d June, 1809, William Hays deposes, in 1769,

1770 or 1771 Samuel Lamie and James Anderson built a house on the land Andrew Lamie now lives on. James sold to Samuel, who was living there in 1774. .... *16th June, 1809, Robert Fowler deposes, his brother's claim lay between Lamie's settlement and mouth of Cove Creek and a certificate by settlement was gotten by his brother's wife and William Rogers, who married her. The patent was in the name of John Fowler, heir-at-law of James. John died, infant. He died 1787 or 1788. It is not yet determined who became heir at his death. John Lammie has purchased the claim of James Fowler, son of John Fowler. 23d June, 1809, John Lammie deposes, in 1770 Samuel Lammie settled on Cove Creek and lived there until 1774, when he was taken by Indians. Andrew took possession and cultivated it 1775, 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779. He employed Hugh Hays to cut house logs and in 1780 he hired Edward Jones and deponent to cut briers. In 1780 the house was raised and on 25th December, 1780, he moved his family into the house. Samuel Lammie was never married. Deponent was born 1st October, 9 a. m., 1763. ..."

Hugh (5) This record refers to an adult Hugh Hays in SW VA by 1775. By this date Hugh (1) was clearly in Derry Township, Dauphin, PA; Hugh (2) was a child; Hugh (5), b 1740 son of Patrick (1) is the only other currently known Hugh Hays for whom this record would fit.
Hays Hugh 3 Not 560 1779 Page 124.--19th October, 1779. Hugh Hays, of Augusta, son of, Patrick Hays and nephew of Hugh Hays, late of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, deceased, to James Buchanan. Similar to above. Person:Hugh Hays (5) son of Patrick (1)
Person:Hugh Hays (1) Uncle of Hugh (5)
Hayes Hugh 3 7 560 1779 Page 123.--19th October, 1779. Patrick Hays, brother of Hugh Hays, deceased, late of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to James Buchanan, all his interest in estate of Hugh, deceased, in Pennsylvania, or of his daughter Margaret (deceased ?). Person:Hugh Hays (1) Hugh (1) is deceased by this date.
Hays Hugh 2 Hugh Keyes? 6 136 1793 John Galbreath vs. Brown's Heirs--O. S. 163; N. S. 58--Bill, November, 1805. In 1779 orator with George and William Brown were purchasers of a tract near and a lot in Lexington. Before all the purchase money was paid. George conveyed to William (George's son). William has departed from Virginia and never returned. George had died, and it is believed William is also dead. William's heirs and representatives are, viz: John Wilkinson and his wife, Peggy; William Long and his wife Mary (late Peggy and Mary Brown), and daughters of William, and sons George and William. Answer states that William departed in 1784. Answer sworn to in Blount County, Tennessee, by John and Margaret Wilkinson and William and Mary Long, 17th March, 1808. Andrew Kennedy deposes, 1810: George Brown gave all his property to his daughter, Margaret, who afterwards married Hugh Hays (Keyes). John Calbreath was son-in-law of George Brown. Thomas McClellan deposes, 1808, in 1795, (Sepr.) to Kentucky and returned to Fincastle in 1800 or 1801 and soon afterwards heard of George Brown's death. Galbreath is McClellan's father-in-law. James Galbreath was John's brother and traded in indigo to Carolina, and died in Pennsylvania. Hugh Keyes and his wife remained together only a short time. They were married about 1793. James Wardlow moved to Kentucky. Margaret Keys is sister of Andrew Kennedy's wife's father, and is sister of Galbreath's wife. William Galbreath deposes in Rockbridge, 30th April, 1808: James Galbreath died in Pengua, below Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Mathew Hanna came to Rockbridge in 1782. William Hillis had a son-in-law named William Young. Hillis had come to Lexington about 1795. Margaret Keys is about to move out of the State, March, 1805. John Wilkinson deposes, 1808, that he was informed by his wife, Margaret, sister to George and William, that George Brown left this State in 1800 or 1801, and after residing some short time in Tennessee, he went to Kentucky and entered the military service of U. S. and went to Mississippi Territory, where he was reported to be in 1802, since which time nothing has been heard of him. George (?) was at time of leaving 21 years, or upwards, old. As to William Brown, he being 17 or 18 years old, left Lexington in November, 1801, and has never been since heard of except once, about three or four years ago it was reported he was seen in Philadelphia. Power of attorney by George Brown of Rockbridge to his daughter, Margaret Miles (alias Brown), to collect all moneys due in Pennsylvania (Cumberland County), dated 6th April, 1790. This record refers to Hugh Keyes, not Hugh Hayes.
Hays Hugh 2 6 225 1809 Samuel Greenlee vs. Mary Greenlee's administrator--O. S. 306; N. S. 109--Bill, 24th March, 1817. On 14th March, 1809, Mary Greenlee of Rockbridge died a widow and intestate, leaving five children, viz: Orator, James; Mary, wife of Hugh Hays; Grace, wife of Charles McDowell; David, and 6 grandchildren, children of her deceased son John; and 3 other grandchildren, children of her deceased daughter, Margaret Montgomery. James died November, 1813. Mary was over 102 years old. Person:Hugh Hays (5) Hugh (1)'s wife was a Mary, but the wife of Hugh (5) may also have been a "Mary"; It seems likely that Mary Greenlee, daughter of the widowed Mary Greenlee of Rockbridge, is the wife of Hugh (5), but more work is needed
Hays Hugh 2 6 241 1817 David Greenlee vs. Mary Greenlee's administrator--O. S. 330; N. S. 119-- Bill, 1817. Mary Greenlee of Rockbridge died 14th March, 1809, widow and intestate, leaving five children, viz: James Greenlee; Mary, wife of Hugh Hays; Grace, wife of Charles McDowell; Samuel Greenlee; six grandchildren, children of deceased son John Greenlee; three grandchildren, children of deceased daughter Margaret Montgomery. Widow of Wm. Montgomery, deceased, viz: James, Alexander and Mary (wife of William Davis) Montgomery. James Greenlee died March, 1813. Charles McDowell, William Montgomery and William Davis are dead. Person:Hugh Hays (5)

Table Notes

The above records were extracted from Chalkley's Chronicles for persons of a specific given name (e.g "William Hays") ordered by "Year"**. Plausible spelling variants (e.g., "Wm. Hayes", "William Heas", etc) are included. In some cases plausible variants that might be typographical corruptions are included for the sake of erroring on the "safe side". For example, Chalkley gives a parenthetical note for one record indicating that he couldn't tell from the original source whether the person meant was "Hugh Keyes" or "Hugh Hayes". In this particular case, the record is probably for "Hugh Keyes", but has been included with the listing for Hugh Hays for the sake of the possibility that it really does refer to a Hugh Hays.

*The number of entries under this name in the Index to Chalkley's Chronicles. The actual number of records may be larger (most likely) or smaller, depending on the accuracy of the index. Some records in Chalkley's for the target may not appear in the index, and other records may not be located on the page described. The former records are indicated in this column with "not", standing for "not found in the index". The latter records are indicated under "text" with a "?" Note that some records, not captured in Chalkelys index, may not appear at all in this listing.
** "Year" assigned may not be the year the record was made, but the year which appears to be related to the event described associated with the person of interest. For example, if testimony was entered into the court records in the year 1836 describing the Revolutionary War record of the target, then the assigned date is not 1836 (when the record was made) but approximate date 1776 (the start of the Revolution).
***This is the current "best guess" as to the identity of the person associated with this record. Note that it is not always possible to tell who a particular records applies to. If the record includes details of the persons family, then it's easier to make the identification. Sometimes no such information is available in the record, but there will be other clues (such as adjacent neighbors, etc) that allow the identification. In any case, sometimes one "John Smith" looks pretty much like another "John Smith", so take these identifications with a healthy grain of salt.
