Topics

Other items to possible include [13 May 2010]

  • Naming conventions (added)
    • Talk about naming conventions, e.g. don't include middle names/initials and why
    • Help:Person_pages#Titles_for_person_pages (to help write blurb)
    • WeRelate follows a very specific naming convention for naming Person Pages and for very good reasons. (If you want to know the history, read here...). Generally, the Person page title follows the convention: Person:Firstname Lastname (##) where ## is an automatically-generated index number to make sure each person page is unique. When you are adding a new person, you do not need to enter a ##; the system will do that for you. Do not use middle names or titles (either before or after the name). You can use the ALTERNATE name field for these.
    • For people born before the current tradition of using surnames (i.e., medieval times), use the following naming convention: ...
  • Create a photo gallery
  • Encourage members to write biographies
  • Link to good examples
    • I added Sample Person Page with the link from the home page
  • Encourage members to nominate interesting person pages to be featured (added)
  • Suggest a dating convention: 04 Feb 1950 vs 2-4-1950
  • Don't only link to help files, but withdraw the information from it and highlight it here
  • Policy on living person pages (added)

Rearrange in Sandbox [7 March 2009]

In order to capitalize on your wonderful efforts without creating numerous email notices, I've made some changes in the Sandbox. I think that your new image link will not work there.

I'm still trying to imagine what I did not know when I was a "newbie" and how I could have been brought up to a more workable level more easily. I'm convinced that creating a few person and family pages by hand (instead of uploading a GEDCOM file) are the best first steps for our new users.

Hence, I've made the changes with those thoughts in mind. I'm giving considerable thought to the benefits/disadvantages of having separate portals for people and families, and leaning toward combing them.--Dquass 12:20, 4 March 2009 (EST)

How would you feel about creating a combined person+family portal in the sandbox so we could see what a combined portal would look like?--Dallan 23:29, 6 March 2009 (EST)

-=-=-=--> I will create a draft of the combined portal in the SANDBOX. See [1]--Dquass 10:24, 7 March 2009 (EST)

Death before Birth [3 May 2011]

Poor Person:Maude Banks (1) seems to have died before she was born. The problem is that I know she was born sometime in November 1905. I also know she lived for 10 days before she died. I can't assume she died in November, since she may have died on December 2 or something. Is there an "on or after" prefix that works on WeRelate for sorting? Also, shouldn't deaths always sort after births and other events (except burial) even if only the year of death is stated? — Parsa 15:10, 2 May 2011 (EDT)

You could try "After Nov 1905". The sorting could be made smarter, but at least that works for this case.--Dallan 12:52, 3 May 2011 (EDT)

Sample Pedigree Map Box [26 May 2016]

Reviewing old pages ... Here, this box currently links to a dead page. Not sure if Pedigree Maps are still being used here. Can someone who knows comment and either fix link or remove, as appropriate? Thank you. --Cos1776 13:03, 26 May 2016 (UTC)

I changed the pedigree map link from Grey>Gray and it works now. I don't think they're used as often since there are the Family Tree pedigree maps directly on the Person pages. --Jennifer (JBS66) 16:14, 26 May 2016 (UTC)
