Place talk:Grey Highlands, Grey, Ontario, Canada

Wondering if you know about the auto-update from Wikipedia [3 November 2012]

In this page I see that you have copied in text from the Grey Highlands, Ontario Wikipedia page. This will be out-of-date if the Wikipedia page is modified.

If you use the following syntax (excluding the ), the same text is auto-populated into the page on a weekly basis, so future changes will be incorporated: <nowiki>{{source-wikipedia|Grey Highlands, Ontario}}

I recently saw a page that even copied in specific sections, but cannot find it again. I would like to use this to include the first section (which is copied by the above syntax) and then a later section such as "Cemeteries."

As you can imagine I had lazy days as well as active days in building up the content on the Ontario pages. I recall Grey County being one of the former.

Looking over the wikipedia blurb, I don't think there will be much to change until 2016 and the next census, unless someone writing for Wikipedia has a creative spark. At least the population ended in "0". There's no point in WR using anything more than rounded population figures for the 21st century. I found one township where they reported a population of 2001 and omitted the year! (LOL)

I feel quite free about taking the vital facts from Wikipedia but throwing away the dross. New heading: "This section is based on an article in Wikipedia"--with the credit line at the bottom. --goldenoldie 03:19, 3 November 2012 (EDT) (Pat)

I also use sticky notes and have recently been considering adding an Article or two with the heading "Cheatsheet - xxx." With this title they should be quick to find in a search.

That way I could share some of my frequently used sticky notes with other interested volunteers. Some examples would be: formatting, census dates (Canada, US, England, etc.) and a Cemetery "place" template for Canada and US.

If you created cheatsheets for your "permanent" sticky notes, I could borrow them as I create new places.

Actually, I just checked and there are over 300 hits on a generic search for keyword "Cheatsheet." Ouch. Will play around with a more specific search.

Now I have to go read the Help pages (and maybe some cheatsheets) you mentioned.

Adding extra sections from Wikipedia [3 November 2012]

Just re-read the last para of your note.

Before starting the work on the place pages I found [[Help:Place pages]], printed it out and underlined in red the important directions. Twelve very useful pages. I just wish they would number the sections that go with the front contents. What you are looking for is on page 7 of the printout.

There is another help section on formatting which goes into some wiki-talk I don't understand, but does make other points clear.

I keep StickyNotes open at the right of my screen while I work so that I can copy repeated material to them and paste back as many times as I need to. The template for Wikipedia History sections and the Wikipedia credit is kept there permanently.

I've started to inspect places in England. Haven't touched anything yet. I wish I knew who to advise that 635 places in Massachusetts have been included in the "England" list--because Massachusetts was once a colony of England. The other 12 colonies, British North America post 1784, Australia and New Zealand didn't get included, thank goodness.

Sticky notes also useful for adding census refs for families with ten kids.

This type of sticky note I also keep on Evernote as family biographies. I actually like how they build up better than my own Legacy Family Tree. --goldenoldie 11:01, 3 November 2012 (EDT)
