OCFA and TONI [25 September 2014]

I have some hesitation to include OCFA references for every Ontario Cemetery becuase of the following:

  • it is dated and no longer maintained
  • to say that a cemetery is included requires checking the database everytime we maintain a cemetery
  • the OGS now recommends use of The Ontario Name Index (TONI)at https://www.ogs.on.ca/toni.php

Similarly, I hesitate to manually add a TONI link to every cemetery. I'm wondering about a template for these generic databases that may contain more information for a given cemetery, as well as the "Not on the Internet" resources. I have not created a template for a while, but could probably figure it out again.

Such a template would be generic, so rather than reference the Simcoe branch of OGS it could suggest OGS in general, with guidance to look for the specific county of interest.

What do you think?

I see your point. I wasn't checking OCFA itself, just assuming that if Canada GenWeb said it was there, it was.

TONI has changed in the past couple of years and I am not as familiar with what it contains as I might be. If it's a better resource, great.

Making up a template is terribly simple. If it's a long one I tend to start in Word and then move it over to WR and translate to wikispeak when I think it is complete. The Research Tips for all Ontario places are made up of two templates--one for the province and one for the county (or sometimes a group of counties like Eastern Ontario that follows the Ottawa River east from Ottawa/Carleton). Note that the two templates start with sub-headings, i.e., an extra "=" on either side of the wording. The second one starts with an empty line so that the sub-heading catches the wikispeak.

I altered the Ontario Archive template today in order to bring in new information that actually came to hand in the past 24 hours. The new Library and Archives Canada website appears to be quite an improvement.

Now I have gone back to working on Cornwall.

Something I have started doing in Britain: if wikipedia lists a whole lot of hamlets in a parish (=township), I redirect all of them to the parish rather than make up a page for each of them. After all, all the info for the people in them will more likely be listed under the parish than under the individual hamlet. This may be disapproved of, but saves a lot of typing--and webspace.

Let me play around a bit. If I come up with a template I will add it to a cemetery or two and then see what you think.

I just did a change to White Chapel Cemetery where I used another heading level for "Internet" and "Not on Internet" so that they are high-lighted.

What do you think?
