Winfall was originally included in a royal land grant to the Elliott family, who dominated local affairs for generations. Other prominent area families included: Mitchell, Brown, Daniel, and Page.

Originally a simple trading post, the town experienced a minor boom with the construction of a depot by the Lynchburg & Durham Railroad.
