Westhampnett Rural District was created in 1894 following the Local Government Act 1894. It was a local government administration designed to cover the needs of a number of rural parishes in the westernmost part of Sussex around the city of Chichester (made a municipal borough in 1896).

The rural district was abolished in 1933 and the parishes were transferred to Chichester Municipal Borough, Bognor Regis Urban District and Chichester Rural District. The specific destination for each parish is given in the table below.
