The information I wish to share regarding Vandalia is colored somewhat by my age in that my knowledge of Vandalia was acquired during my first several years of life in the early 1940's. It was and I believe still remains a small community of African-Americans. My family drove by that community, located on FM 1159 between Clarksville and the Red River, as we were going to and coming from Clarksville to the Hopewell community where we lived. It is approximately 5-6 miles northeast of Clarksville.There were no businesses in Vandalia; rather, a small number of houses off the main road FM 1159. Not every Saturday, but often the Vandalia families seemed to have a community gathering in which meat, presumably pork, was barbqued. Passing by the small community, my brother and I would frequently wave at an individual or individuals within sight and the individual(s) would wave in return. At this point I do not know how or when the small community was settled or where the individuals may have come from.
