Upper Greetland originated as part of a township named Elland with Greetland, south of Halifax in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It was west and north of the more urban Greetland and was also known as Greetland Wall Nooks. In 1894 Upper Greetland was separated from Elland with Greetland to become a civil parish within Halifax Rural District. In 1937 it was again merged with Elland and Greetland to become an enlarged Elland Urban District which remained in existence until 1974. In 1974 the whole area became part of the Metropolitan District of Calderdale in West Yorkshire.
