Bedfordshire Record Office's Guide to Bedfordshire Parishes describes Upper Gravenhurst thus: former Chapelry of Shillington from 14th Century but a separate parish from the reign of Elizabeth I; Civil Parish combined with Lower Gravenhurst in 1888 to form Gravenhurst; Ecclesiastical Parish united with Lower Gravenhurst in 1972 to create Upper with Lower Gravenhurst.
