NOTE: There are at least four places named Thorpe in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Two were parishes located further north and east: Thorpe le Street and Thorpe Bassett. Wikipedia has an article on a hamlet named "Thorpe, East Riding of Yorkshire" in the parish of Lockington which is another place altogether.

The Thorpe in Howden Rural District, presently under discussion, is not mentioned in Wikipedia. However, GENUKI adds another settlement of "2 cots" named Thorpe Lidget at the same distance and direction from Howden.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Thorpe from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"THORPE, a township in Howden parish, [East Riding of] Yorkshire; 1½ mile N by E of Howden. Acres: 296. Real property: £398. Population: 33. Houses: 8."

Historically, Thorpe was in the ecclesiastical parish of Howden in the wapentake of Howdenshire. Despite its smallness, it was made a civil parish in 1866 and from 1894 until 1935, it was a civil parish in Howden Rural District. In 1935 the parish was abolished and the area became part of the civil parish of Eastrington, its neighbour to the east.
