GENUKI, quoting from a gazetteer of the 1820s, describes Temple Hirst as being located in the parish of Birkin and the wapentake of Barkston Ash, 5 miles from Selby and 4 miles northwest of Snaith. It has a population of 141.

From 1894 until 1974 Temple Hirst was in the Selby Rural District of the West Riding of Yorkshire. Following the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Temple Hirst was located in the Selby District of North Yorkshire.
