A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Sowerby under Cotcliffe from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"SOWERBY-UNDER-COTCLIFFE, a township in Kirby-Sigston parish, [North Riding of] Yorkshire; 2½ miles E by S of Northallerton. Acres: 799. Real property: £787. Popuation: 50. Houses: 9."

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Sowerby-under-Cotcliffe was located in Northallerton Rural District. Historically, it was located in the ecclesiastical parish of Kirby Sigston in the Allerton Wapentake. It was in the Northallerton Registration District.
